Don't let that V8 go over 2000 RPM. It has a drinking problem when it does.

I do not monitor any rpm. I just go the speed I want in the gear I want and whatever the mpg is it is. Sounds like you are ready for a Prius. Your mpg is probably all you can expect in combined city/highway driving especially if you have bigger heavier tires. I like to hit the gas harder and use more gas because the V8 sounds so good.

Right around 1700 rpm is a good place to be. IF I do this consistently I typically hit 20-21 hand calculated. This is with a v6, but the v8s dont seem to lag far behind with Toyota motors. I drive like a little old lady on my daily commute because I am in no rush to get to work- saves me more fuel for tearin it up offroad, right?

If you're talking about running in 5th gear, then the question you're asking is whether it's true that going slower saves gas.
The answer is yes.

With the V6 on the freeway I get about 26MPG at 65 which is only about 2000RPMs but only about 23MPG at 80.

Joking aside, at about 80mph I'm running a hair over 2kish on 33" ATs with a full metal bumper and such. I don't keep track of my fuel mileage really because its consistently worse than it should be due to mydriving habits; I work less than a mile from my house, I rarely drive anymore than about a 5~10mile radius more than once or twice a week, and I love when my V8 goes VROOM VROOM! Sounds like you're getting good mileage for your set-up, maybe you could get 18mpg if you're really hypermiling it, but at that point you'd be better off driving at like 60~65mph, being an old lady, and so on. These trucks are thirsty, its the price we pay for the Vroom Vroom, and honestly I am okay with that. :driving::lookout:

X2...the one time I was able to get 20 mpg (actually 19.5 but I round in favour of the V8 muahaha) was on a tank where I stayed under 2000 rpm the entire time..but its no fun driving like that, life's too short :rockon:

Sounds like this is the biggest factor for mileage when cruising down the highway and maybe getting up to speed as well.
My garage queen is a full on beast, the topic was posted more to not only educate myself but others as well. But, I truly enjoy the surprising performance of my V8 4R!
Makes sense, I can run around 65 mph on my daily commute and still be running with most of the traffic. Trip wise, the major highways around here have most people driving between 70-80 mph which is not conducive to fuel economy at least not with my current setup. Probably going turkey hunting this weekend, I will offer to drive to see what mostly highway driving equates to for grins.

lol, I had that coming! I need to speed up then throw it into neutral when going down big hills!
Sounds like you have a nice setup. Talk about commute, mine isn't terrible but I probably put 200 miles a week on my 4R.
I know what you mean, I find myself getting impatient when driving at slower speeds (like the speed limit) :zoom:

The biggest factor at highway speeds is wind resistance. Slower speed is exponentially less resistance.
City driving it's the right foot.
The key to both is being smooth. Look way ahead and slow rather than brake.
I am a professional driver, OTR trucker. Over 150,000 miles per year. One MPG average equals several thousand dollars over the course of a year.
Tire inflation helps a little with MPG, but mostly with tire life (more $$$).
Weight is a factor, but minimal. I once used a full tank of gas in my pickup against a headwind to get firewood. Less than half a tank used coming home (now a tailwind) with a cord in the bed.
