What is your gas mileage?

My 2001 T4R gets 18ish in town and 20 on the highway.

I was wondering if anyone else had found a way to increase the mileage and if so, how did you do it?

Your mileage is what it's supposed to get but getting the engine to breathe a little better (filter and an exhaust) is all you really can do and drive even more conservatively and keep it under 70mph on the highway.

I get 16-17 around town and on a recent 500 mile road trip over the continental divide and back I got 19 since it's a pain trying to maintain 70ish up those passes.

Thanks, but I will never stop wondering if there is something that can increase the mileage. I just switched to synthetic oil and was toying with the idea of over inflating my tires by 2 - 3 PSI to see if that helps.

I plan on keeping my 4Runner for many more years and a few extra miles per gallon over the long haul will save me some $$$.

City driving I get 18-19mpg. On a recent trip to the shore I got 25-26mpg highway. That was doing 65mph on average.

I run synthetic and have my Nittos (D load rated so they are a bit heavier than the OEM size) set at 35psi. If I wasn't so into acceleratiing from a stop and doing 75 on the highways I'm sure I'd get a couple more MPGs.

Lucky, mine gets between 11-14 in the city.

Used to get 17/21, but now with 265/70/17 AT tires, I'm getting 15/18.

I don't there is much you can do to dramatically increase your MPG. Even if there were some things, you have to weigh the cost to benefit ratio. Putting in a $1200 exhaust (I'm exaggerating) to get 1MPG extra is not worth it.

The only way I can see you getting better gas mileage is if you do a diesel or 4cyl swap. But, again, how long will that take to re-coup the money spent?

I used to keep a very detailed journal of my MPG (since I commute 100 miles a day). But now, I don't really care. I'll keep an eye on the MPG to make sure everything's functioning ok, but I figure it's too much hassle trying to keep under 70mph on the highway, slow take-off's, blah blah blah. If I drive like I want, (80mph, normal take-off, etc), it's only a few dollar's worth of difference at the pump. I can live with that.

I've only calculated my mileage 3 times but they were all 18 point something which was in combo of city / suburban driving. I have 3.4 w/ 5 spd and 265/75-16 tires at 28 psi - I bet if I pumped them up to 35 I'd get another 0.5 mpg or so. Good news is the 3.4 is designed to use the cheap stuff whereas I think Toyota "recommends" the expensive stuff for the 4.0

I get confused with the octane recomendation. In the owners manual for the 2000 it say you can use 87 but leads you to believe you should be using 89.

The vortex

Hey i know it seems cheesy but that tornado/vortex (i forgot the name) thing that you insert into the air breather hose gave me about 1.5-2 mpg increase in my old ford explore. Maybe worth a shot...? It's like $60 i think. Beat $1200 lol. Let me know how it goes.

Even a 2mpg increase can be due to alot of factors and $60 is still alot of money to throw away. Deckplate can give you that for $12.

That's weird, my 2000 manual just says:

"Select Octane Rating 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher". Then it goes on to warn that using an octane rating lower than stated above will cause persistent heavy knocking.

I don't read that as saying I should use 89.
