Must be on Sunroof models. My 99 sr5 (no sunroof) has the garage door opener thing there.
What minor designed details do you appreciate most on the 3rd gen?

Works for either use.
I tried sunglasses in there when I first got mine and it was too small. I must just have a fat head

Huh...didn't even think about using it to hold a garage door opener. That said, I have a keychain garage door opener so "storage" for that is already taken care of. Since I have 2 vehicles it allowed me to only buy one opener instead of 2!

I believe the sunglass holder replaced the "business card" holder when the new rear view mirror/map light pod came along in 1999 or 2000.

If you look, there should be some plastic pegs that you can use to align with the button, and you stick the GDO up there with Velcro. Then you just push the door of the cubby and it cycles. (Pegs may have disappeared, but the mounts should be there.) This is on '99+, I believe.
Yup. I thought it was a sunglass holder too. Then my glasses didn't fit, and I noticed the pegs. So, to the manual I went, and sure enough, its designed to push on and hide your garage door opener.
You've probably noticed that you have to pull it open, but that it does have a spring in it (to keep it from rattling only, so you can push it up just slightly, and when you let go, it does not open fully. My wife's Rav4 has a sunglass holder in the same place, but you push up on it to release the latch, and it swings down and has felt padding inside.
However, if your glasses fit, thats pretty awesome.

My favorite is the small turning radius and ability to park in tight spots without doing 3-4 turns to get in. I also like that my antenna is just a little taller than my truck, so when I enter a parking garage and my antenna doesn't hit, I know I'm good to go in. I like how it's very capable off road. I had one lady tell me she sold her 4runner to buy a Jeep because she wanted to go off-roading more. After seeing mine perform, she said she regretted it. Mine has the elocker 
I like the three cig lighters in front and the one in the back.
Oh and the fact that the wife and I can throw an air mattress in the back and go camping anywhere or anytime.

The rear window is by far my favorite feature. I also like that it has a double din head unit.
