What oil filter do you use?

what about Bosch? ive started using them because ive heard good things about them from a guy that used to work for fram...just a heads up, he says he wouldnt buy fram oil filters since theyve changed in the past couple years.

on the first Gen that thing is a pain to get to so I take the easy way out and take it to the dealership for the oil change

Yeah the 3rd gen filter isn't exactly in a convenient place either. Almost makes someone think of putting in an amsoil bypass filter system. Atleast it would be in a better place and you could get two filters going on it.

See there, another bonus of the 2.7, the oil filter is ridiculously easy to change. As for the Wix, I always ran them before the place in town I buy from switched brands, I feel Wix makes a really good filter. Now I drive all the way into the city to get the Mobil 1, I have also tried the K&N and they are nice as well.

I use amsoil filters, they cost 8 bucks but I run em for at least 10k.

The BEST thing about the 4th gen V6 is that the oil filter is on the top (very easy to change)!

I was using the Fram X2 oil filters ($10 each, not the orange ones), but I'm using Mobil1 now. Don't like the fact that they are so small though. I was thinking of switching to Amsoil as the oil filter housing is much larger (larger size = larger surface area of the filter element). Boaz, can you confirm that? Also, does Amsoil use synthetic filter elements? If so, I might get a some. Thx

The SDF57 is the recommended oil filter for the V-6 and V-8. The filter is honestly no bigger than the OEM filter. "The filter media itself is a unique Cellulose, Synthetic and glass media." THat is directly from my Amsoil Literature.

THe Larger filter you are thinking of is probably the "Bypass Oil Filter". This is used in conjuntion with the SDF "Super Duty Filter" on the Bypass Mounting Kits seen HERE

Actually Amsoil makes another filter that will fit in place of the SDF57. The number is SDF34 and is longer than the SDF57 and will add a little bit more capacity to fill when you do an oil change. An even larger one that may work in this application is the SDF15, but the outside diameter is too large for the V6. I don't know if there is enough clearance on the V8.

Here are the dimensions on each of the filters:

SDF57 - Thread: 3/4 x 16, O.D. 2.920, Height: 3.496

SDF34 - Thread: 3/4 x 16, O.D. 2.920, Height: 4.846

SDF15 - Thread: 3/4 x 16, O.D. 3.720, Height: 5.276

All of the above filters have an Anti-Drainback Valve.

To answer the question of what oil filter I am currently using on my 4Runner, it is Toyota (mine is new and doesn't have 500 miles on it yet). Just bought it two weeks ago and it is the wife's daily driver! When I change the oil and filter on the 4Runner for the first time, it will have an Amsoil filter on it. However on my T100 (w/212,600 miles) I am running the SDF34 and have had no problems with fitment or doing oil changes.

My experience with Toyota 1984 Taco 4x4, 1995 Landcruiser, 1992 Lexus SC400, 1994 Lexus LS400, 1992 Lexus ES300 and my 2004 T4R. Toyota engineers and uses the best OEM parts, filters, etc for your Toyota. Never a problem. Had over 180K miles on the 1984 Taco and 130K+ miles on the Landcruiser when I sold them, all ran like new.

Tale of 2 Denso oil filters

I'm buying Toyota filters at the dealer for around $6. I found out on Bob is the Oil Guy forum that there are two types. The are both Denso, but one is made in Taiwan, and the other in Japan. They said the Japan one is superior, but not easily found in the states.

You can tell the differernece by looking in the big hole. If there's white plastic, it's from Japan. Metal mesh is supposed to be from Taiwan.

Anybody got another Toyota filter laying around? I don't have an extra to look in.

MIne says made in thailand.... and no whiteplastic....and no mesh that I can see.....hmmmm

This is suppoesed to be the difference:

When you buy your Toyota filter try to get the ones that actualy say made in Japan onthem! Look down the oil outlet hole(see bigest hole). If you see a plastic cage inside with long slits as opposed to a steel tube with lots of tiny holes that is good! The Toyota filter's with the plastic cage inside have the better filter media! IT is a synthetic glass fiber that is folded in a radial partern. A bunch of radial filter pleats are grouped together like petals on a flower! These are waht come from the factor but they are harder to find then the cheaper Toyota/Denso filters!

You may have missed the point. There are 2 different Toyota filters - one is from Japan, which is the OEM. The other is made either in Thailand or USA. The Japan one is superior, but harder to get - even thru the dealer.

I ordered in some to my dealership. They just called to say that they are in fact the Japan ones (they said often they get sent the other regardless of the part number the order). I will check & report when I get back from vacation.
