What OIL should I use on my 94' 4runner with 137K miles?

Ok so I bought this car about about a month ago and I want to change the oil because i don't even know the last time the previous owner changed it. I've read up on different oils but I still don;t know what to get. All I know is that I don't need synthetic because I don't drive in extreme conditions constantly.


And what viscosity should I use? I was reading up on 0W-30 as a Fuel Economic oil and also good for start up protection....what the heck is start up protection anyways? And does it really help your gas mileage.

Also what is a good brand that is not overpriced? I heard Pennzoil sucks and Mobil 1 is great but I don't know. What brand and viscosity do you guys use?

I use Mobil 1 5w-30 Truck and SUV, however for you I would start with the owner's manual and go from there.
Synthetic is a good choice for any condition, but in an older engine it might be too "slippery" and get through old seals and such and develop leaks.
0w-30 is a lower viscosity, meaning it flows easier at lower temperatures than say, 10w-30 or even 5w-30. The flip side is that it may not hold up as well in higher temperature conditions. This easier flow when cold is better for your engine at start up, as it allows oil to reach the top of the engine more quickly.
Consider where you live (climate, seasons, dust levels, etc.), how you drive (towing, off roading), and how long the average trip you take is, then chose an oil, considering what the manufacturer, Toyota, recommends.
As far as brands go, that's a debate I don't want to start here: .

that exact same thing happened to my brother when he switched to synthetic in his blazer. He then switched back to regular oil and it was fine. Anyways I ended up getting Castrol GTX 10W-30 and an STP oil filter.
