What on earth is that SUPER LOUD SOUND?!?!?

We've been fishing a lot and don't break down the poles when we go. So, the poles are sticking out the window of the lift gate.

One day, while heading to the Oceanside Pier, we heard a symphonic, high pitched, whirring/whistling sound. It only happened at speeds of 15 mph or more and got louder until we reached 35-45 mph, then completely disappeared.

We determined it was the wind passing through the fishing line holes on one of the rods...

Does something like this sound probable (maybe a loose skid plate causing vibration or wind passing through a hole in the roof rack)? Your rig is heavily modified and it may be worth looking into.

Do you happen to have aftermarket skids? I had a similar sounding problem when I installed my arb skids. The mid skid was touching the exhaust & would change tone depending on how fast I was going. There has also been a situation where I bent my skid up and it was touching the driveshaft and would make a similar sound.

I would agree about the BajaRack. Check it. Take off the wind deflector and drive the same speeds and see if that is the cause. I remember when I had my BajaRack on my FJ and the wind deflector would create crazy wind noise. They had to redesign it.

No aftermarket skids...

And the rack has been nice and quiet since I got it... I did check all the various mounting brackets I have on there this afternoon but everything nice and solid.

Before washing today I took a good long look around under the truck. No sign of anything there at all. I did notice that all the heat shielding is rather er.. flimsy and light weight and has very few mounting points. All fine and all for it's purpose, but I'm wondering if a stick or a rock got under one and might have bent it down just enough to get in the wind under the car. I could see them vibrating easily given their shape and limited mounting. Then my kicking around dislodged it, though I didn't see anything fall at the time.

Also with my 3in lift in front and nothing in back (still waffling on raising the back or lowering the front) there is a lot more air going under there with my reverse rake than the car was designed for. Could exacerbate the possibility of the heat shields vibrating in the wind.
