What options on new '06

Hello Everyone!

My girlfriend is in the market for a new car and has decided on the '06 4runner. Since we're planning on doing a substantial amount of off-roading, i'm curious as to what anyone would recommend getting added on from the dealership?

i'd also love to hear opinions on the v6 vs v8 and whatever else anyone thinks seems important to mention.

we will not be towing.

is there any advantage to the rear air suspension add on if we won't be towing, etc.

If you want to lift it eventually, don't get the XREAS suspension because you'll end up removing it.

Otherwise good luck and enjoy the ride

If you plan to do a lot of offroading and a lot of modifications, it is a good idea to get the base model. Reason being is you'll probably be removing more things just to get it offroad worthy. Imagine getting a limited with the 18" wheels. There isn't a huge selection on aftermarket tires (though it grows by the day). Like GT said, XREAS will need to be removed if you want heavy lifts.

Do a search on the V6/V8 question. It has be rehashed too many times already.

I agree with what was posted so far. Don't get the rear air suspension because that would screw up getting a lift just like the XREAS . . . . although . . . . I do a good amount of off roading and I fit a 2.5" daystar lift in there. . . . . if you will do serious off roading, you will likely need to replace the shocks, etc., but I go several times a month and as long as I know my limits, my 4Runner can go almost anywhere.

glad i posted! thanks for the quick replys. she certainly won't be doing and crazy lifts, maybe 1-2" depending on how the first few trips go. we don't do anything crazy, mainly camping trips on decent old logging trails or jeep trails, no boulders or anything like that.

she is strongly considering the limited, are those 18" rims really that difficult to find a good tire for? or is it more of a cost issue...


sharp4runr... been reading the forum on and off for about three weeks now. found a few things on v6 vs. v8 maintaince costs etc and assorted other commentary, but i haven't found any "diffinitive" threads if you will. i've been searching but the search won't let you search for v6 or v8 cause they're not 3 letters

If you tow, get a V8. The V6 does fine towing, but the V8 does better.

If no towing, drive both a couple of times. See what you like. The response, power delivery, handling, and sound are different.

Toyota will offer a bigger rebates on the V8, making it cost the same.



For your use, there are suitable tires in 18". Probably many more to come. No reason to pass up the Limited. The rear air suspension may be a good option. You can always find a set of 17" SE rims if you really need more tire options.

A nice set of all terrain tire's in a 265 size , V6/V8 are both great and there are many battles here about the 2 engines....lol.

I chose the 4x4 Sport package with the v8 and think its awsome ! I love the v8 !!!
