What psi in MT's??

New member
Just got my 1st set of MT's. These will be my only tires. What psi should I run on the road? They told me 40psi at the tire shop. What are you guys running?

I asked the same kinda question.
Didn't really get a good answer.
I'm down to 32 psi on my Goodyear MTR's and they still feel like rocks.
 
I don't believe there is one good answer. Tire pressure depends on temperature (always should use colds measurements), load, tire....etc.

I run my Cooper STs at 26psi cold.

The ideal road pressure is the one that keeps the tires tread contact pressure equal across the surface of the tire. Remember that the fronts and rears normally need different pressures. Also, in many cases the rears for trucks and SUVs would be given a higher pressure to allow for carrying loads (more weight normally needs higher pressure to keep proper contact).

The old school way to find the road pressure (and still a good starting point) was to go to a smooth, level, paved parking lot, dust the surface of the tires with flour, roll it forward a revolution or two and check to see if the remaining flour is equal across the surface. More flour to the outside, raise the pressure, more to the inside, lower the pressure.

The new school way is to use a temperature gauge. Go for a drive long enough to really heat up the tires then stop and check the temperature across the tires. Higher temps to the outside, raise the pressure, higher temps to the inside, lower the pressure.

Most even wear across the tread and best traction (on road).

I learned the flour trick from an old time off-roader back in the '70s. The temp. method when I was involved with a vintage Formula Ford racing group.

You should runner higher pressure in rear tires when the load requires it. However, when emty you'll probably want to run lower pressure in the rears to keep it from being too bouncy.
