What rear coils do I want?

I currently have a used set of OME 890s and OME nitrochargers.
No bumpers currently. Just skids, sliders, and a roof rack. At any given time there is 150lbs of rear drawer and tools in the back.
The rear setup was purchased second-hand through (after searching) looks like they saw a lot of hard offroad miles.
The coils seem ok but the nitrochargers are done. On the street they are stiff and slam the rear through bumps. Off-road when you hit any whoops or dips at more than 5mph, if feels like the back end is on bungee straps as it sling shots you along.
I have Bilstein 6112s upfront and am happy with them. Eventually I may bump them up to the tallest 9th setting and throw on some SPC uppers.

For the rear through, I have conflicting interests.
I like the lighter spring-rate of the 890S as a daily. I know I need shocks regardless but the coils are ok for my daily needs which is a 70 mile/round trip for work.
They problem is when I load the truck up for a camping trip. The previous 2.5" of lift sags out almost completely. It's not competent for the camping trips I take. Half of which have a canoe strapped the to the roof.

I don't want more than 3" of lift unloaded!

1: 891s will be too stiff as a daily without armor from what I've read.

2: Maybe swap to toytec 3" coils as they shouldn't have the sag issue like the current 890s do from previously being overworked. They may be essentially the same spring of the OME 890 so I don't know until toytec gets back to me with spring rate numbers.

3: New LC80 tokico shocks and used LC7 wraps. This may be too much lift for my liking with 265s but I don't know yet. I know this is the SS 1.2 lift people rave about. He sells the rear only but it comes with the taller 8 wraps I believe which is too tall out of the box for me.

4. New shocks and install airlift 1000 bags. I know these are designed for stock coil height applications only but I have an idea of leaving the oem rubber cone in the coil and using it fill the space for the airbag to contact. If it is too tight, I can cut off sections of the cone until it fits properly.

I understand my desires for a rear suspension setup conflict but I am hoping I can find a happy middle ground with the knowledge on this forum.

jmferg The LC coils that come with the Sonoran Steel lift are too tall...at first. They do settle and I thought they rode great and had really good flex. I also had a storage drawer in the back and it held camping loads very well. The only reason I sold those coils was due to getting a rear plate bumper with swingout, where now I’m carrying 2 spares on trips along with propane & 8 gal of gas hanging off the back. That’s the only reason I switch to the OME 861’s.

I would say LC coils. When I talked to Steve back when I was ordering my SS 1.2 rear only lift, he explained that he used the 7 wraps in his lift. Maybe that differs by year, (I have a 2002), I don't know. But I was very happy with my SS rear lift. I also had 265/75/16 tires. When the coils are brand new, they start out a bit tall, but they will settle. I know it is a bit of a taste thing, but I really liked them paired up with the 265/75/16 sized tires. Had I not went with bigger tires and wanted a full size spare on a swing out, I would have just stuck with those and been happy.

I liked the feel of the ride, although that is really subjective when we get into perceptions of ride characteristics. But for what it's worth, I liked them and mine is my DD. The LC coils will also allow you to add some weight without sagging the rear. Also, it is a simple swap if you ever decided to go for a rear swing out and so on. You pop the LC 7 wraps out, and pop the ARB 861's in and you are good to go. No need to change out the rear Tokico shocks.

This is what mine looked like when I first lifted my rig with the 265/75/16's. They did settle a bit.

Thanks for the comments.
I'm curious what a well used set of LX450 front coils would look like.

Can someone link the master LC coil thread?
I've searched and can't find it. I know it had hundreds of replies, pictures, color-coding info, essentially all the information I would ever need

I had the ToyTec 9602's on for about 7000 miles. I removed them and went with ARB 861's when I added my rear bumper/swings.

IMO they drove very well unloaded with the Boss rear shock. Before the rear bumper I used to carry the spare in the back cargo area. So they saw a constant weight of about 100 lbs. They also performed pretty well with that weight both on and off road.

The only time I had them truly weighed down was last year when the wife and I went to Cochise to climb. It's about a 12 hour drive from my house and we where fully loaded. Between the climbing gear, bivy gear, cooler, water, dry foods, spare, extra parts, and tools I estimate about 350 lbs in the cargo area. In 11 hours of highway driving it handled fine. There was some sag . Maybe an inch.

Unloaded they will push you to a full 3" of lift in the rear.

I still have them sitting in the garage. I haven't listed them in the classifieds because I don't really care if they keep sitting there. If you decide that's the route you want to go shoot me a PM and we'll work something out.

The trade off is that any spring that has a low enough spring rate to ride nice on the street/unloaded will sag if you put a lot of weight in the back. You just have to find the happy medium between acceptable ride and lift while unloaded and acceptable ride/lift while loaded. I run toytec superflex and have been very happy with the ride. They yield about 2.5" of lift on my truck with a 4xinnovationa bumper with swing out and fridge in the back, and when I load it up for a trip they probably drop to about 2" of lift.

I'm of the opinion that you should get the softest spring rate that will hold your loaded weight. Softer spring will let the shocks do all the dampening and, therefore, will ride better.

Good luck with your search!

P.s. I ran OME 891's before the superflex and they yielded about 2.25" of lift unloaded and 2" loaded and were stiff as hell whether the truck was loaded or not.

I have the 7.5/8 wraps (used with about 180k) in the rear with tokicos. I also run 265/76/16 and love them. Its great ride quality and loaded down with moderate weight, It evens out at most! You cant really see the rake unless its from a distance and youre trying to look.

7.5 wraps would be perfect for you IMO. Should be just a bit of rake daily and level out when loaded down.

BTW, if you're looking to sell those 890's let me know. I've been hunting for a set.

Check out Icon Overland coils. I just picked picked some up as I too have conflicting needs. The springs have progressive resistance and the more you compress them the stiffer they become. I’m getting an off road tear drop trailer and thus I will frequently (but not always) have an additional 300-400 lbs in the back when I am towing off road. The goal is for the ride to be smooth as my DD but still perform when loaded down for overlanding with or without the trailer. I’m paring them with King 2.5’s with RR.
