What should I offer? 1987 4Runner

New to the forum and could use some help... I've always wanted a first gen 4runner, and have the opportunity to make an offer on one. It's a 1987 with a 22re, 5 speed, and 130k miles. It has some rust around the wheel openings and some peeling paint on the hood. The issue is this: it is not currently running. I may just need a battery and a tune-up or the engine could be blown.

Thoughts? It appears to be mechanically sound and I don't see any obvious engine or drive line damage. The body and interior is a little rough, but overall not too bad. Please help me out here... what would you offer? Thanks so much...

Agree with both above. My 89 would start and run rough but had front end issues that kept it from being driven, rust in all the normal areas and I paid $600.

Bump for the afternoon crowd... what do you all think? She is asking $1500, which I think is way too much. I was going to offer $500 and see what happens.

How about if it was running? What would it be worth then?

I don't know what it is but those things sell like gold up here where I am. It could go from 800-2000 up here. What are so more specifics? lift? when did it last run? how long has it been sitting? Uncovered especially. How bad is the cancer? Cancer alone drops the price that I'm personally willing to pay, it's nasty stuff to deal with.

it looks like it might have a lift on it, but i can't tell for sure. it was a second vehicle that was driven on weekends, etc. it was last driven over a year ago and has been sitting outdoors (uncovered) the entire time. everything else is unknown.

i'd be careful bud, does the engine turn over at all? Try to take a battery out there or something to get it fired off. If it runs rough, it's ok at least its running. Otherwise if you can't get it to at least fire off or even turn over. Honestly tell her you're looking at only buying the body because the motor is unknown, you could spend $50 to get the motor running or buy a reman'd for over $1000. (Not sure how much 22's are reman'd) Any pictures of the suspension? motor? interior?
If you can have someone go with you to look at that doesn't have car-goggles on haha
 
Based entirely on looking at it, I'd say that's a $1200-$1500 truck if it was running decent. More if it was running well. But for $1500, it needs to be running and driveable.

This is what most people are gonna tell you bud. Max $700 without it running.

My prices are always higher than everyone elses, not really sure why :/

Thanks guys, that's about what I was thinking. Also, just realized I left out part of the story. It belonged to the brother of the woman who is selling it. He recently passed away and she needs to sell it. She doesn't know much about it, that's why I don't know more.
 
Whatever you do just go into it thinking that you are going to put $1,000 into it. If after the buying price and spending $1,000 to get it on the road you would be happy, then you probably got a good deal. In the end you may spend less than $1,000 to get it running, but in the event that it needs brakes, bearings, some engine work, fluids all the way around and little and nickle and dime stuff here and there $1,000 can go quick.

Hold down your "SHIFT" key, type in "4Runner" and join the club.
