What Size Magnaflow

I am replacing the stock muffler on the v8 with a magnaflow; which size is recommended so that I do not get the highway drone?
Their catback system comes with a 5" x 11" x 22" muffler....thought about just buying this muffler by itself. Can anyone comment on noise level at cruising speeds? What size muffler are you using? A search helped, but looking for a little more info.

i believe i had the 5''X8'', overall length of 20''. i think that's the smallest you can get. the sound when you step on the gas is great. at cruising speeds, you can hear the deep hum of the magnaflow which at times can be annoying. i just recently took the magnaflow off and put on a borla. the borla is quieter because the muffler is bigger and i like it a bit more. just remember, the smaller the muffler, the louder the sound, and the greater chance that itll drone.

5x8? I didn't even know they made that size!

I'm running the 14" which I thought was the smallest ...

I love the sound, even on the highway. There's a tiny bit of drone but a big part of that is due to the K&N intake and the fact that I chopped off the exhaust resonator.

If I hadn't done those two things, I don't think I'd have any highway drone.

You could always go with the 20" if you're concerned about droning ...

4route, do you know the height and width of yours? Is it the oval?
I too have cut the resonator off, so I might should go with the 5x11x22.

Magnaflow

Hey Huntrunner,

I just purchased and installed the Magnaflow catback system for my 04 4runner V8. The system is awesome and the sound is great. It has aggressive V8 sound of a Mustang GT when I accelerate. There is a definite drone at about 2000rpm and this does not really go away since the majority of time I am driving in the 1600 to 2100 rpm range. The construction is also perfect with it being stainless steel and it took about 1 hour to install by myself. I only have 6000 miles on my runner so the exhaust muffler bolts were not frozen or rusted. I just used I believe a 14mm and 15 mm socket and wrench.
Now, on a negative note. I removed the cat back system after 55 miles of use, why? you may ask. Because I did not like the attention and the sound of the exhaust note, constantly droneing out my interior. What I mean is that my 4 runner is modified as a 4x4 theme and not a street runner. I got a lot of looks because the sound is so great and I did not want to race anyone. Also, the drone is nice but since my rpm range is right at the drone, the sound annoyed me.
As far a performance, awesome! what else can I say. I gained about 13 HP and also my mileage went up about 1.5 mpg. My throttle response was superb. I could not believe the acceleration I got just by adding the cat back but I also have the TRD free flow air filter. Needless to say the cat back system is just sitting in my storage, boxed up. My idea of the perfect muffler for the 4runner is, the stock muffler with the magnaflow pipe and tip after the muffler section. So this is what i may do, chop off the pipe after the stock muffler and have a shop weld on the magnaflow part with the dual exhaust tip.

Hey thanks for all the info, this was really useful.
I backed off the idea of the magnaflow after I called them. They told me I would get the drone, especially when I am towing (I tow often). They said it is really hard to prevent drone on an SUV because of all the interior space, unlike a pick-up.
I already have my exhaust turned out the side with a stainless tip; the look is nice.

anyway you could post a sound clip? I could host if for you if you record it.

I want to put an exhaust on my V-6 but I would LOVE to hear someone elses before I buy a magnaflow or borla, cant deciede because I havent heard either of them on a V-6.

Thanks,
Jake
