An exhaust manifold replacement. I couldn't even see the oil filter bracket, let alone get it off, so I knew I would have to take the manifold off to get to it and the two oil cooler hoses. When I took the manifold off, sure enough, it came off in two pieces. That oblong shaped o'ring on the oil filter bracket was indeed the culprit. Both rings were cooked and flat as a pancake. This project went pretty well, but my arms got torn up. Gloves helped, but if I ever have to do it again, I would wrap my arms in ace bandages as well. Every part on this vehicle exists for the sole purpose of tearing your flesh to shreds. I did have to modify the heat shield a little by drilling new holes and cutting some places down. I thought about just leaving it off, but the new manifold was so ugly that I wanted to cover it up. And maybe it will be some help to keep the heat off the filter and oil cooler hoses. Just want to thank everyone here for their help in fixing this common problem. If anything like this happens to my 2000 V6 4runner, I'm going to sell it because I can't even imagine working on a motor that's shoehorned into it. I would have to think that it would be easier to just pull the motor. I'm not done yet, and I will be picking your brains for more help in the near future. Thank you all again.

wow, just wow.
When I replaced my oil cooler lines, removing the alternator made it easier to get to them. I thought about replacing the two O rings for the cooler but didn't. I saw a guy on Pirate I think use a long ratchet and 24mm bolt to remove it.

When I did the timing belt and everything else on my 2002 I was cussing replacing the little hoses on the oil filter cooler.
Big hands and a T4R 3rd gen do not get along.
After numerous cuts, abrasions and the loss of 2 quarts of blood I replaced everything up there I thought I might have to possibly replace in the next 100K miles - alternator, water pump, all belts, idlers, etc...
And of course due to form I traded the vehicle in a few months ago. Somebody in Denver got themselves a really, really clean and well maintained 2002 4Runner. LOL

I somehow always seem to buy new tires and then just weeks later sell my car for something new. It's happened 4 out of 6 vehicles in the last 10 years.

Yeah, this purchase was a little odd for me. There was absolutely nothing wrong with my 2002. I spent money on all the good stuff when repairs were made - Optima battery, Disk Brakes Australia rotors, Michelin LTX M/S, blah, blah, blah. Never go cheap on my vehicles.
Then I made the mistake of going to the Toyota dealer on a Saturday. Got that new truck smell in my nose and simmered on it for two weeks.
Now I have a 2015 TE sitting in my garage.
Note to self: Stay away from car dealerships.
