I have a 97 SR5 with about 140k and it will drive fine but at random will idle really high, around 2000 RPM's. Even while driving it feels like I'm using cruise control. It also is having trouble starting, again at random it will just crank and crank but no start till about the fourth try. This is not the first time so I'm a little worried. Any one have an idea on how to fix this?

After I cleaned my TB in my 98 the IAC became clogged with gunk from the TB. There is a hole in the TB housing where the cleaner drains into the IAC.
I took the Idle air control off and cleaned it out and the truck idles perfectly. I wonder if your IAC could be dirty and sticking intermittently? When mine was dirty, the truck idled at about 1200 in gear and would maintain a speed of about 15 miles per hour on a level surface.

Cleaning probably wont help. f the TPS is your problem (which would be my 1st guess too), it'll probably just need to be replaced. You can test the resistance on the TPS and see if it's within spec before you buy a new one though.

its measured in ohms... not sure what the correct range is though, hopefully someone like brian2sun will chime back in with the correct readings

It's different depending on year and engine. Throttle-by-wire years are totally different. Put your vehicle info in your signature (go to User CP top left) and we can be much more helpful.

What I found out on AllData and the shop manual is that its both the same ohm (Ω) reading are the same for a 4cyl and the 6cyl.

Thanks for all the input guys I cleaned out the throttle body with cleaner today, I drove about 60 miles with no problems but it could always happen again because it usually is fine then, acts up, then is back to normal. If I do have any more problems I'll be checking the sensor. Thanks for the PDF, oh and it does have the cable attached to the throttle.
