What the hell is this thing? [answered]

When I go over some bumpy roads. My skid plate clatters like no other. I finally found the cause. I want to take this piece off but I don't what if it's a good idea. What the hell is this thing and why is it there?

Its a vibration dampner. Mine started rattling a bit after I climbed I70 west of denver. Mine barely buzzes a bit when in gear idling, otherwise I don't hear it.

Maybe one of these days I'll try to either tighten or use some adhesive to quite it down? :cowboy:
 
Would it hurt anything if I take it off? It sounds like a hammer on my plates has I go down the roads.

That thing's been off my 96 for years. The husband just took one off the 99 because of skid plate rattle (Savage). You might get a little more vibration I found it very negligible.
 
Tuned Mass Damper. Meant to lessen drivetrain vibrations.

I'm pretty sure you can google "what is this thing 3rd gen 4runner" and like 80 threads pop up, they all seem to have nearly identical titles.

Funny, i was just under my truck trying to figure out what that part was bc it is worn down and loose on mine. I think this is the part number: 3318335050 dynamic damper for transfer case

Yeah mine's gone too because of aftermarket skids. I get a little more vibration sitting at a traffic light or so, but not even noticeable if you hadn't driven it before.

One of them is mine too!

Wonder if its just there for comfort, or if it actually helps prevent premature drivetrain wear. Parts aren't free so manufacturers tend to put them on there for a reason.
 
Curious of what the sound sounds like... I'm tracing noise in this general area and it sound like the brake backing plate is rattling off the vehicle but its not. I discovered this very Jewl to be loose as can be when I put hands on it

It sounds like 2 skid plates bashing against each other in my case.

So glad I found this post, was just up under my 99 and found the same thing except mine is held on by some wire twisted around it. hahah ... looked it up just to see and they are $350 -$400. Guess it's staying on until something knocks it off or I get some skids!
