What tires to get?

I have a 1993 4Runner V6 5 Speed 4x4 that came with the P225/75/R15 wheel package from the factory, but currently has P235/75/R15 on it. I wanted to upgrade to some tires that have a little more bite and possibly a little larger. I like to hit the trails once in a while and something a little more aggressive would be ideal.

Should I upgrade to 31x10.5s even though I only have 4.10 gears or should I stick with the P235s?

If I did upgrade to the 31x10.5s would I need to get a different set of rims or would they fit the same rims?

Yes, 10.50x31-15 will fit your rims and will only be 1.7+/- inches taller so less than an inch less clearance. I don't think you will get any rubbing but maybe someone with a '93 can tell you with absolute certainty.

For occasional off roading, I would suggest BFG AT's. But that's just one man's opinon.

I just put the new Mud Terrains (MT TA KM) on my '85 4Runner in a 10.50x31-15 size. They balanced with very little weight and I have been amazed at their on-road handling. Also, they are very quiet, much better than the previous mud terrain design. I don't think you want to go that aggressive though if you aren't off roading that much and the AT's are probably just as good as the MT's everywhere except in heavy mud.

Supposedly 33x10.50 will fit on the stock rim and not rub. I've seen several trucks with that combo on them. Acceleration would suffer pretty badly though so the 31x10.50 is probably a better option unless you want to regear.

31x10.50 will definitely fit on the stock rims as it was an option on these trucks and won't kill the power too bad either. Let's put it this way, I wouldn't go any smaller than 31's on the truck and after running aggressive tires and seeing the difference they make I'd definitely go with an MT tire. It's worth a little noise and vibration as you'll go further in every type of terrain from dirt to rocks to mud. It's well worth it...
 
Actually just noticed that you have a 5sp V6 truck... Wow, those are rare!

I wouldn't have any problem trying out a 33" tires with that truck. I ran 32's on my 4cyl 5sp truck for years and while it was all it could handle I think you'd be fine with the V6.

Just if you do the 33's make sure you don't go wider than 10.5" and you have to keep them on the stock rims. If it rubs at all it will be slight and you could get away with a tbar crank or bj spacers in the front and a spacer or longer spring in the rear to clear them fine...
 
Thanks for all the quick replys. I am glad to hear that I wouldn't need to get new rims to fit the 31x10.5s, but should I be concerned that my stock gears are 4.10 and the gears that came with the 4Runners factory equipped with the 31x10.5s had 4.56 gears. Is that going to cause unnecessary wear on anything?
 
Maybe a little moew wear on the clutch but nothing to worry about. I took a stock truck with a 22RE and put 32x11.50's on it 3 months after I bought it new back in 95 and it was always fine.

I did end up putting a few motors in it eventually but I was also pulling a 2500lb boat when the trouble started. For the 10 years I drove with no boat the stock motor lasted and ran great.
 
I will probably go with the BFG A/T 31x10.5 tires. The only problem that I have is that I have two tires on my 4Runner that are in desperate need of replacement and two tires that only have about 10,000 miles on them and do not necessarily need to be replaced.

I have never needed to use my spare, but should I also replace it if it is a P235/75/R15?
 
Well I went ahead and bought the BFG 31x10.5 tires today. I got a really good deal on them. They look very nice on my 4Runner. What do you guys think?

That's a clean looking 85 you have there. I guess the tires do look better with the black side out. Oh well, not much I can do about it now.
 
hey, i am having the same dillema. i want go go with big ass mud tires, but my runner is seeing mostly road duty. but i thinbk i am going to buy a mud tire. f..k noise. my stereo is gonna cover that. im thinking either: BFG A/T or M/T in 31s

I guess it really just depends on how much off-road use they will see in comparison to on road. If you run mud tires on the road most of the time and only get a little use out of them is it really worth it to have the mud tires?

Personally I do most of my driving on road, which is why i went with the BFG A/T 31x10.5. Budget also had to play into my decision as well.

The best way to decide between an A/T or a M/T is are you really going to use them to their full potential?
 
I have the new mud terrains and they are not noisy on the higheay at all....at least not yet. That could change after they wear a bit. I used to always run the AT's. BFG redesigned both the AT and the MT a year or so ago so that they are better both on and off road....but they would say that wouldn't they! The AT's would be better on road and are pretty good off road unless you're into lots of mud, in which case you would be much better off with the MT's. If it's just rocks and/or sand, go with the AT's.

Be aware that there are two different MT's and a Krawler. I have the MT TA KM not the KM2. Here's a link to the appropriate page on the BFG website:

I've been quite pleased with the new MT's and they look great on the 4Runner. Also, they balanced with very little weight. That tells me that their quality control is pretty high.

Everything on your list other then BFG are probably only good for 30K miles or less.

I have 35" bfg mud terrains on my 4runner they have been on there since I purchased the truck back in 01... They probably have close to 40K miles on them now and still almost half thread life... Granted this has not always been my DD which is the reason for such low milage in nearly 6 years..

I have had the same luck with all terrains as well...

Out of everything on that list I think I'd go with the Sx's because they're so cheap you can afford to replace them every few years. Just be sure to get radials for street use and you'll be fine. They'll be noisy and grab hard, but ride reasonably well. I'm running Irok radials on my 99% street driven truck and love the hell out of them. But of course, I wanted a noisy, nasty mud tire on there when I built the truck. They perform exceptionally well off road when I go there too.

Friends don't let friends buy Thornbirds... :lol:
