What to do about wheels? (pic included)

Rather than try to explain which wheels I have, I thought I'd just take a picture.

I have 2 questions:

1. I LOVE jsmarine's technique of sparying the wheels w/ rustoleum undercoating then with matte black to give the wheels an 'all black' look, but i'm afraid that crummy plastic cap in the middle (see how its peeling?) won't look uniform w/ the undercoating spray. anyone done this and can say if that will look ok?

2. If i decide to keep the rims 'as is', is there a better cap available? i might have accidently caused the silver paint to come off by using 'wheelbrite' on them one time. i would prefer an all metal rim cap if that is possible.

Just take some sand paper and steel wool to all of it. Run your fingers over any problem areas to feel for rough spots....sand them down till smooth and you're good to go.

Go to autozone and get some anthracite Duplicolor wheel paint. Scuff up the caps and spray them. I did mine and they turned out perfect.

My Wheels

I used a wire brush(Except on the caps) and then sand paper to smooth everything out before I sprayed them with 3 coats of self etching primer, 3 coats of duplicolor's graphite wheel paint, and 3 coats of duplicolor's clear wheel paint. I also masked off the tires by using over sized note cards.

I spray the center caps on my 97 every few years. That's the easy part. The rims are a pain.

Try finding them for lc80 or lx450 wheels!! The price it cost for 4 USED center caps is bout the same as what it cost for one wheel!

Get real automotive paint like duplicolor or SEM

Sand down a the wheels and all the caps. In fact you should just soak the caps in paint thinner to remove all paint from the plastic.

Don't use home depot (rustolium) primer and try to top with another brand of paint. Only use same brand.

Prime the wheels x2
Paint the wheels x2

Wear proper $30 3M breaking mask for paint. Spray paint is full of carcinogens and a simple dust mask does nothing.

I have a red one as well and was thinking the same thing. For SR5 fenders (black) I'd probably go with gunmetal to offset things a bit. With Limited fenders (silver or body colored) you'd probably be safe with either.

SR5...Planning on painting all the fenders, side steps and rear bumper at the same time

It may not be the best choice for wheels at $15 a can. Also, you would want to top it with 2 coats of clear for a set of wheels.

Buy Duplicolor Self Etching Primer, 12 oz, Aerosol DAP1690 at Advance Auto Parts

Buy Duplicolor Wheel Coating, Graphite, 11 oz. Aerosol HWP102 at Advance Auto Parts

and what about clear paint? this?

and to the other poster..at the risk of hijacking my own thread..i am so envious of this i could spit. that...looks....AMAZING
