What To Do!?

So I am facing this dilemma… I put on a set of 17” black Moto Metal rims yesterday and threw a set of GY Duratracs (285/70/17) on them. Looks fantastic! However I have no lift and as suspected, they rub! Now, I knew that this would happen before I put them on but was going go down to a near by offroad shop and them lift the truck a few inches before I went driving around. I spoke to Harper, via pm, and he said to have them throw some 2” spacers on the front and call it a day. I love that idea but am now hesitant about voiding out my warranty for my springs and shocks.

Discount tire still has my 275/70/17 GY Wrangler MT/R’s with Kevlar waiting and said that they would throw those on if I came back. Only problem with these is that I am not a big fan of the white lettering on the side and the tread is of such that you can not just simply reverse the tire. Is there a solution for people who want to turn there white letters black?

What do you think I should do?

Don't worry...I'll post pics of the 285's regardless of if I give them back or not :flamethrwoer2:

I wonder if the 285's would fit on the Trail model. I say get the MT/Rs. I don't mind the white letters. You can always black them out with black leather dye or have read about other products used to black them out.

Both those Duratracs and MT/R's are the E load version huh?

I am not sure if they would fit? I highly doubt it though.

I really like the look of the larger wheels and the black on black (The girlfriend, however, does not :lmao:)

I would totally go with the Wrangler w/ Kevlars but am not sure if there is a permanant solution for turning the white letters black :shrug:

If these tires are directional (I get the impression that they are) then mount the tires that would normally go on the drivers side onto the passenger side (white lettering facing in). Do the same with the tires that would normally go on the passenger side, mount them on the driver's side (white lettering facing in). This way you won't lose the directionality of the tire tread and will have the black sides facing out! :thumb3:

The tire dealer should know what to do...just tell them that you want the black sidewalls showing.

The MT/R will only mount one way. If they come with WOL then that is how they are mounted. I have researched. Did discount tire think these were better than the duratracs? Any insight?

They said that Duratracs are amazing AT tires and they are great in the mud, snow and in the rain...Basically great in everything. They are really quiet too.
I have not heard much about the MT/R's... They look nice, though.

Those are the 285's, correct? They look great! As someone already stated, trimming the plastic isn't such a big deal, but the lift would totally complete the look of the ride. I'm tempted to lift mine up a bit at some point.

Yup! They WERE 285's... I didn't want to get into lifting or spacers this time around. It didn't just rub on the front or plastic pieces - It was rubbing on the frame in the back. You would NEED to raise it or 285's would not work. I was happy to be the guinea pig though ;):

I now have 275/70/17 MT/R's With Kevlar. A little bit louder and am a little worried about icy roads and heavy snow. These tires look great (again, I'll post pics) but they don't have nearly the amount of sipping the Duratracs. Damn, I wish those tires came in a 275!!!

I'm gonna get the MT/Rs too. Awesome. Call me crazy but i think the 285's look to big.

Couple of questions if you don't mind.
How much louder?
Ride rougher?

Can't you get the MT/R and have them Sipped? Tire Siping - Discount Tire

Are the Moto Metals wider than the Stock wheels? maybe that is why they rub.

Please take some pics of MTR's I really want those... Though i may go 265/70/17 I'm not sure i want the weight of the E load. Wishing they made the 275/70-17 in C load and Black Letters.

well i never actually saw it with the 285's on. All i know is when they put wheels on (which were mounted on 285's BFG M/T's) they called and said they rubbed. looking back i should have gone over then and seen where they were rubbing.

but i'm not sure what the dimensions of the trail wheels are. i know the moto metal has a 4.5 BS because that's what i needed when i lifted my tacoma. i think the BS on the trail wheels may be 4 because after the moto's were put on it looked like they pushed the tires out a bit further.

I've heard some good things about the Toyo Open Country MT's. Anyone else?

Does anyone know if the MT/Rs would be better suited for road than the Toyo MT's?
