We need a sticky if there isnt one. I asked this and never got much reply. If auto then servicing for that but, if manual then clutch disk thickness should be inspected if high miles. There should be an inspection plate. Timing belt intervals are 60k but, I just found out these are not interference engines so it will not be catastrophic if they break. I would adjust the price about $700-$1000 if you can talk them into it for a forgotten timing belt/wp maint.
Tires arent cheap. Regular maint like oil changes should be documented. If not then an inspection of the curent oil condition.
look for leaks underneath. Engage 4wd to test. ask the person how often they used 4wd(they should tell you it was engaged every month to keep it working) Look for general condition and get a sense from the seller if he took pride in his vehicle or if it was neglected. Thats not something you can ask so much as deduce from them. Make sure all the windows work. Rear window should go down with remote. Open all the doors.. operate everything. Run a carfax but, look for collision damage anyway. Dress to get on the ground and get underneath and look at the frame rails front and rear. Start it and let it idle for a while while you talk to the person. Look for mud packed in everywhere. Not a problem if they were honest but, if you see mud and they said never off road you know they will lie to you. It should track straight down the road when you drive down a straight road. You should pick one with out as much crown (causes drift right) Ask for records. Lots of records and one owner are good. fewer records and two owners less good. no records, 6th owner and just bought it but, need to sell is suspicious...6th owner found the problem that everyone else before has sold it for..Lots more I'm sure.
