What transmission fluid do you use?

What transmission fluid do you use? I know that it is recommended to use Dextron 2 or 3. What brand's do you all prefer? I was also wondering whats is the difference between Dextron 3 and 4? Is 4 compatible with all versions before? I also noticed that on most of the Dextron 3 bottles it says something like "designed for GM vehicles" or something along those lines.

Last time I did a drain and fill I used the advance auto brand trannsmission fluid because that is all the store had... is that a bad thing? I plan on doing another drain and fill tomorrow, but don't know if it would be better to get the advance brand again or another brand.

The dex #'s are backward compatible, so anything at least dex 3 will work. If you go synthetic, you will have to flush then fill.

I was looking on the valvoline website and the max life transmission fluid is basically dex 4. It said it was compatible with conventional and senthetic blends... I thought that was odd. Has anyone tried that?. I was also wondering if it was bad to get fluids with all the extra high mileage additives? I might just go with the advance brand until I can do a full fluid change because that's what I had been using.

Been using Max Life from Valvoline for about 20,000 miles. Seems to be working great. Just checked it, and it's still nice red.

I use nothing but Amsoil synthetic fluid in all my cars.
If I were not able to find Amsoil, Red Line would be the next substitute.
