What wud u consider essential mods?

Well depends alot on budget and final goal. But here is the order I am doing/ done and think is the right way.
1. Rock Sliders
2. Tires/ Lift
3. Bumpers
4. Skids
5. Lockers and gears
If you are going to wheel a while stock height then tires and skids can be moved up. Protection should alway be close to the top. I put lockers and gears last simply because the longer you wheel open/open the better you will learn your truck and improve your skills.

It really depends on your off-roading background. If this is your fist T4R then I'd say Pike hit it right on the head other than maybe moving skids up before sliders(depending on what/where you will be driving). However, if this isn't your first rodeo, I would say get some skids and a locker(s). The skids and locker(s) will allow you to drag yourself over many obstacles that even some with lifts and large tires will not make it over.
In the end, it's up to you to take your vehicle out stock and see what you need/want to improve its capability.

from a stock unit i see no "essential modifications" the 4runner is quite capable from the box, it was one of the few full size suv's that you could drive from the show room up the trail, but as with anything you can always go bigger and the things other people have listed are good suggestions and traditional 4x4 practices, if you wheel alot you would already know that so i don't really know how to answer this one. ...i'll put a list together anyways as if you are building a rig for mainly 4x4 purposes .

I agree with this. I run 4-rated trails (on the TrailDamage.com 1 - 10 scale) routinely in my unmodified 4runner. The only "mod" I have is slightly larger tires (265/75/16 vs the stock 265/70/16) and I removed the running boards. That's it.
At this point, a lift would cost me ~$600 minimum, and I figure if I put that $600 towards actually going somewhere fun, I'd enjoy it a lot more. :shrug:
BTW: Headed to Grand Canyon, Vegas and Death Valley in 2 weeks!

Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association
it's about 15 minutes outside of the strip at the end of flamingo , losts of fun little trails that take you some pretty cool canyons and such, a really cool 2-3 hour side trip from the strip.
this place is also cool, but really the only time i would go there is sunrise or around sunset, other wise it's mostly just desert

and if your coming from the grand canyon check out Zion national park as well, it's about 114 miles from the grand canyon on your way to vegas and some really cool stuff if you come that way.
i got family in st.gorge,ut (about 1.5-2 hours from vegas) and make the drive down that way quite often, i'm personally quite fond of those places.
