what year 3rd gen would you buy?

if you can do it all over again, what year 3rd gen and trim option would you buy? why? and how much would you pay considering it's age and the high mileage that they currently have.

im happy with my 98 sure it dont have the fancy interior but ive updated the outside to make it look newer
 
I bought a '97 and kept it for a year then bought the '99 Highlander I really wanted so no need to do it all over again. If I went back I would've bought the '99 first.
 
I own a 97 that was already lifted, if I could do it all over again I would buy a 99 not lifted and do the work myself, that way I know it's done right, now I'll be replacing the suspension on my 97 so I guess I am doing it all over again! at least it'll be done right this time!
 
happy with my 99. but if i'd choose another package it would be the green jade mica sport edition 4x4. NO CHROME!
 
97 4runner panama model, LHD with 3.0TD and stick, Red Painted bumpers, no leather, SR5, Tan interior.
 
An imperial jade mica 99 highlander

hopefully equipped with 4wd, auto, factory e locker, factory supercharger

because I despise buying an already modified car... but a few of those can be swapped in, as long as it's factory parts! :D
 
If I would change anything I would have to agree with John and import a diesel. What I have now is still the best choice for me amongst US models. Stock is always a plus if you're anal or if you generally distrust others :thumb3:

Dont get me wrong though, I do like a manual, but I've decided I'd rather have an automatic 4Runner that's slow and easier to drive. I figured I'd get a small sedan or sports car thats a manual. I'm drooling over the idea of a lexus is300 right now.

Can't import the diesels and license/insure them for use on the street so even if you wanted to it wouldbe difficult to get one.
 
having had a 99, Id say Id get a 2000 Highlander w/Elocker.. Its a year newer and still has the elocker :lookout:
most people want the 99 due to the 1" longer springs, but your going to lift it anyways, so what does it matter lol
 
02' Thundercloud Metallic Limited 4WD, I would probably go with an aftermarket locker so I don't really care about the stock e-locker, plus that would allow me to have a center diff lock as well :) 02' because it is the newest 3rd gen possible (higher chance of being "unmolested")

Yeah i take back that, i like my current one, apperently i saw a fuelly mpg report from someone who did the swap (also heard from UK guys a while back it did poorly in fuel economy), he averages like 21 mpg on a 5 speed, i get like 19 mpg on average, for the loss in hp and partial gain of torque its not worth it. I was thinking it got more along the lines of 27 to 30 mpg. So i change my decision to what i got with painted bumpers.
 
Yeah I'm happy with my 98 too.

But, if I could have two runners, the second would be a 99 Highlander in IJM since that color is awesome IMO and since it is kinda a rare find, well in my area anyway.
