Whats a fair price for this?

Well I'm back again guys. This looks to be the one finally, the only thing it doesn't have is the e-locker.

1998 Toyota 4Runner 4x4

Looks to have a good service record and VIN checks out. What would be a reasonable offer for this? Tags are due 1/16 I'm waiting for pictures of the underbelly (it's a SOCAL car) so I'm not worried about rust but want to make sure and I'm also waiting for pictures of the interior.

I feel this is a great deal at $6900 but want to make sure I'm not getting duped!

I'd pay $6900 for that one no doubt if I was in the market so long as the paint, underside, and interior are as clean as they appear to be. 110k miles isn't much at all and it's got the 5speed and 4x4.

6,900 is a little bit high because I'm sure it needs something... If all of the records are there. If it had a t-Belt job with everything done to it including the Cam seals etc etc It would not be to far off at all. If not I call BS. I know its a 5 speed and 4x4 but still. If you really want to know what you are getting and you are serious and you are in So-Cal you need to call Eric and Yotamasters in corona. He is worth the drive I promise you that. The man has forgot more about Toyota's and Lex. than we will ever know in the first place.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm awaiting pictures of the frame and interior still, once I get that I'm going to head down and take a look at it.

no offense guys but the price that is "a little high" is actually subjective and really based on where one lives, here in California, T4R's are spendy, I've seen them as high as $15K for a 3rd gen...then again I bought my fully loaded 02 Golden pearl..for under $4K...like I said, its all over the board but CA is more expensive...apologies if I stepped on anyone's toes!

Check the mileage on CarFax before you even bother to go and look at it. I got my hopes up over 6 different 'low-mileage' 4runners before I finally bought mine. They all said to have 110k-130k on them, but all were actually over 250k; they just had the odometer rolled backed. A couple had close to 350k on them. Mind you, they looked and drove great, but still.
I dang near drove 4 hours one way to go look at one with my wife, cash in hand. Thank God I checked the CarFax the night before we headed out, or that cash probably would have gone to her for an appeasement present.

I'm writing all this to say that $6900 in SoCal seems fair to me for what you're looking up (haggle, obviously), but make sure no one is pulling one over on you.

Actually do a CarFax, not the other cheaper options. I've seen some that don't even mention the last known mileage.

Thanks for all the info guys. I use a website called Motosnoop that does a free VIN check for me. It's worked really well in the past and I also cross reference with the online toyota.com/owners to look at the mileage on both websites as well as the service history. This one looks legit just doesn't have the E-locker on it. If the guy will ever reply back I might be heading down there tonight to buy it. I'll keep you guys updated!

That's in great shape for a California rig, especially if you're really looking for a 5-speed.

However, even for California prices it's high. I was seeing 150k-175k 5-speeds go in the $4.5k-$5.5k range, so that's definitely on the high end. I realize the low mileage is nice, but to be honest my 4Runner with 199k still drives amazing. I did have to work on the steering a bit though, but wasn't too bad.

But if it's exactly what you want, then get it. I paid $7k for mine, but it's supercharged :zoom:

P.S. 4Runners in the Bay Area go for cheaper than in the valley/mountains. If you're willing to drive you can get a good deal.

I'd say it's a little high, but if the mileage can be confirmed, it's a good deal - for that price, the interior should be pristine, and zero rust. If the timing belts were done (make sure they can prove this) and it truly needs nothing, I'd pay 5500-6k for that up here in Washington state. California is a bit higher, so not too far off.

That said, if you do find the right rig, paying a bit more is worth it.

Milage has been proven... I was going to go down tonight to look at it/buy it. Unfortunately the I5 had a mudslide so I will have to wait until tomorrow to go look at it. He's saying mutliple people are asking for it at $6900 and because it's seems like a really good deal I believe him. If it looks as clean as the pictures he sent me and the ones in the AD I will most likely just give him the asking price and take it. I really appreciate all the comments on this, it makes me feel better spending the money. I'll keep everyone posted!
