What's a window regulator?

Hello,
I am having problems with the rear passenger window (99 4Runner SR5) with power windows. The motor is working but the window goes up very slowly- Comes down ok!

It does this when using the driver switch or the switch on the rear door and I've been told if you hear the window motor, the problem is the "Regulator".

Has anyone replaced the window regulator and is the motor attached to it?

The regulator is the scissor-like mechanism that is attached to the door and the bottom of the window and lifts it up or pulls it down when the motor is activated.
This is usually the cause of the window going up crooked or pushing out of the tracks in the door frame.
I've never replaced one, but I think the Chilton manual shows how.

The post above got it right on the money about the regulator. I have replaced many of them , although never in my 4runner I guess Toyotas really do hold up. I have done several in my Acura, and with no instructions figured it out just fine. just make sure to look at waht your diong when taking it all apart, and put it back together the same way. its not to bad... let me know if you have any questions
