I'll be purchasing a 4Runner in NC at 3%, once I move to CA, I'll get taxed again by CA DMV another 5.25% (8.25% - 3%) if I register an out of state vehicle?

Please tell me this is not true???

thanks

this is to prevent people from simply crossing the state border and get an instant 5% off on cars. usually there is a inital period after purchase that this difference in tax will be assessed by the dmv. this is to protect the economy of any states with a higher tax bracket from losing sales to states with lower taxes. you need to check into how long your truck needs to be registered in NC so you won't have to pay more taxes in CA. a friend bought a car in oregon where the sales tax is ridiculously low compared to california and had to keep it in oregon for 2 months before bringing it into california in order not to pay additional taxes to the dmv here. this is just common sense and protection for the state's economy and california is not the only state that does this.

This is from the DMV of California's web site. Also, you may want to check and see if the truck will have all of the necessary California smog stuff. There is info on the site about CARB - California Air Resources Board - as it relates to new cars from other states without proper CARB certificatin.

Hope this helps.

How do I register my nonresident vehicle in California that was last registered in another state or country?

Your vehicle may be subject to California registration from the date of entry. Fees must be paid within 20 days from the date the vehicle entered California to avoid penalties.

You will need to:

Complete an Application for Title or Registration (REG 343)
Submit your out-of-state registration certificate

Submit your out-of-state title (If you have it)

Provide evidence of the California Smog Certification

Provide an odometer mileage certification (If your vehicle is less than 10 years old)

Bring your vehicle to a DMV office for verification of the vehicle's identification number (For your convenience, we recommend that you schedule an appointment by calling your local DMV
)
Pay the fees

Commercial vehicles, including pickup trucks, may also require a weight certificate.

Existing law imposes a use tax on a vehicle purchased outside of California and brought into California within 90 days of purchase. New legislation effective October 1, 2004 through July 1, 2006 requires payment of use tax on a vehicle purchased outside California and brought into California with 365 days of the purchase date.

Thanks

Very helpful thank you ... it looks like there's no getting around the incremental car tax CA charges for out of state registrants. In my case, having bought the car in NC at 3% sales tax, I'll have to pay an additional 5.25% in taxes.

AAH THE LEGACY OF GOV. GRAY DAVIS!
