I am looking at getting my first 4Runner. I am pretty picky and I want something that is going to last. I know it is rare to find a factory 5spd so when I saw this one I wanted to check it out. Drove 2 hours and test drove it. The frame/engine bay are spotless. It has been in TN it's whole life, no rust except under bumper and running board. There is no service records of timing belt change (if it has been replaced). There are a 2 small dents in tailgate/back hatch. Interior is in pretty good shape. Everything works, A/C power windows and sunroof and back window. 4wd was good. I am looking for a weekend toy and plan to do small lift and bigger tires. Again, this will be my first 4runner and I just don't want to overspend on a toy. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hold on there dunktap I think the market has changed for used 4runners. Back when I started looking for my own 4Runner I noticed that 3rd gens with less than 150xxx miles were ranging $7k and up. (If they were at 7k that typically meant that the timing belt needed to be done or other maintenance required). The really nice ones were $8.5k and up. This was back in late 2012 early 2013. Now when I go through Craigslist looking for projects I'm finding that those same low mile 4runners that are in pretty good shape are now averaging $7.5k and down and they are becoming less and less common to find. With all that said this 4Runner is in pretty good condition based on the pics provided. I wish you posted what they are asking for it but without knowing that my max would be $6k unless they provided some service records for it. I'd be more comfortable around $5.5k. This one is just like my 99 5 speed although I have a rear locker(I don't know if this one does or not) pretty close in condition mine was just dirty and had surface rust which was easily fixed, and I paid $4.5k last summer for it.

Well given the mileage, I assume that it has to of been replaced at least once. That is just a guess though, so don't take that to heart. They are asking $6,700. But I believe the price is negotiable. It does not have a rear locker. A good friend of mine has a shop and all he does is work on these. With that being said, he said $300 would be most on timing belt. Elocker will cost for sure, but overall everything is in awesome shape. I'm thinking if I can get it under $6k, then it will be a reasonable deal.

I looked at it yesterday and told them it was a little more than I wanted to spend. They have a $550 dock fee due to a sensor they had to have replaced.... Plus taxes buying in-state and county fees..... I offered $5,400 cash and they told me they were at $6,400 OTD.

$300 to have a timing belt done is a complete steal.

The $550 sensor is their responsibility. They had that much figured in when they bought/took it in on trade. Don't feel responsible for that.

If anyone said $500 to replace a sensor I'd laugh them out of their shop.

They've got it listed at $5,980 on their sight so 6,400 OTD is without them budging on the price after taxes or whatever else applies in your area.

That's what I thought too..... But he said it was because they didn't have the tools for it and had to outsource it to a Toyota dealer. I don't know the county fees but TN sales tax on vehicles is 7% I believe. If I can get it OTD for $5,900.... is that reasonable?

I'd come back at them with $5800 or $5900. 500 bucks to replace a sensor though? I'm with MisplacedTexan on that I'd laugh all the way out the door.

I'd be comfortable at 5,900 OTD. But my budget may be different than yours...

Everything but state tax, registration, and emissions fees are negotiable. Document fees, delivery fees, etc. are all just made up to inflate the price so they can have better margins on "cheaper" cars.

More than I want to spend but not out of budget. I bought a 2016 Ram 2500 mega cab diesel 2 weeks ago, and I'm almost at 50% equity. So with that, I took out a little extra to play with. Had intentions on doing a pretty big lift and wheels/tires on the truck (Potential Sema build around $17,000 in parts) and thought that was kind of a waste of money and that I'd be better off getting something to have fun with (Runner). So here I am.... Want to build a weekend trail vehicle. Something to camp out of. Do a small lift and maybe some TRD wheels with 33's, elocker eventually and some bumpers. Would like to stay around $10k for the full build.

I would skip an E-locker and go straight to the air locker. Don't know exactly how much the difference would be on that 4runner, but on my 5th gen the difference was trivial enough between the locker and air compressor that I'm just going to an air locker.

....and I get on board air with it too!

Its not the only one out there and 5,400 cash would work well buying from a private party...BUT..the waiting gets 2 U 4 sure but it'll be worth it. Average for me has been about 4 months and i traveled 2 to 5 each time to buy um.

Would be more trouble free than either the Yukon or Jeep, or even the Dodge for that matter.

$550 for any sensor on a 3rd gen save the knock sensor (OEM, replace both with a new wire harness) is just used car puffery.
