Whats my gear ratio

Last weekend my 2000 4runner, 3.4l, 4x4, with ABS, 16" rims, 5sp manual trans. I blew the rear end when I was at my lake house in WI.

I am trying replace the whole rear end with one that has an E-locker.

I found one in a 99 4runner with ABS, Automatic trans, 16in rims, that has the E-locker. It is 5 hours from me and my 4runner is in WI still.

I have the VIN numbers from both vehicles and tried to call a Toyota dealership to see what both vehicles came with. I can't get a definitive answer from the parts guys at toyota. I was wondering what your thoughts were.

Right now i can't get to my 4runner to pull the rear end and count or look for a stamped code on the axel.

Does anyone have the same set ups in their 4runners and know what their gear ratios are?

Yours is most likely 4.10 and the Automatic is most likely 4.30.

Yours is most likely 4.10 and the Automatic is most likely 4.30.

That's odd, mine has the 4 Speed Auto with Overdrive and it says 4.10 gears on the original window sticker.

I was referring to the E-Locked gears in those cases. Pretty much all auto e-locked gears are 4.30 and most manual e-locked gears are 4.10. There are exceptions, but they are not very common.

Yeah, this is one of those things where, no matter what your sticker says, or what a dealer tells you, you really need to measure it yourself. I looked into this extensively before buying a new rear axle housing and diff, and I found all sorts of guides based on axle codes, VIN's, etc, but none of them are definitive. The only ones that weren't wrong for mine were the ones that gave multiple options, which isn't very helpful either.

SCRunner's little rule of thumb here is about the most accurate one I have found, but it is still just "probably".

Toyota00, you said you can't get to your vehicle right now, but you will definitely want to verify the ratio before dropping some cash for a new axle/diff. All you need is a jack to measure your gear ration via the spin test.
