What's the best full length rack? (In your opinions)

All right, I'll be selling my Tacoma soon ( love the way the 4runner drives much better) and I'll come out a bit on top with some extra cash.

Wanted to see what everybody's opinions were on the different full length roof racks that are available. Keep in mind I do have the sunroof, although I don't really need it, I just don't want a rack that would potentially put weight on it or break it.

Perhaps post pictures of your current racks and a brief description of why you like it?

I love my Sherpa (formally Rocky MTN) rack. its full length, low profile, sturdy, and weight. The lead time when i ordered mine was actually good and my understanding is it's gotten even better.
I think my favorite thing is that its fully modular, it can carry my rooftop tent or cargo boxes. I've even strapped a couch to it for a few block move.
If i was to be picky, i never liked the gen1 front feet, they've since addressed that in the latest revision with a new foot design. i think if i had a complaint it would be where the adjustable crossbar attaches is slightly pinched from shipping and makes adjusting it a slight pain. I know this was a shipping issue and not an issue with the design. It didn't warrant a complaint so i never bothered to email about it.
I need to strip the paint off mine and re-do it as its seen a few trees from the trails and is now kinda scratched and rough.

The Curt racks that are popular on Amazon, are well used on these forums. I plan on buying one for next summer since my family has grown and we barely have enough room in the cargo area for our gear once you add kid stuff. They have some issues with rust but a bit of sealant and quality paint makes them just as good as the much more expensive ones. Plus they are modular and can be extended. You can get an extended rack with cargo net for under $200.

I plan on buying one for next summer since my family has grown and we barely have enough room in the cargo area for our gear once you add kid stuff. They have some issues with rust but a bit of sealant and quality paint makes them just as good as the much more expensive ones. Plus they are modular and can be extended. You can get an extended rack with cargo net for under $200.

this....the curt iss what I did, with 2 extensions and im under it for 225. no its not as slick looking as the Sherpa and don't think I could mount a sleeping platform to it, mine started simple, needed a rack, then one day needed more so added an extension, this spring moving to Alaska added another section to make it a full rack
but does it work, heck yes, you would not believe the load it took moving from Oregon to alsaka this spring,and the amount of lumber it has been hauling this summer has been huge

They are expensive, have long lead times, and at times their CS is tough to contact, but many feel (including me) it's the best full length rack on the market. Looks, functionality and build quality are all top notch.

And if you want to be the coolest dad ever, get a Gobi and install the ladder. It will keep your kids entertained for days.

Gobi haters hate Gobi for a reason. Not only are they expensive, have long lead times, and have crappy customer service, they also screw over the little guy that’s trying to help the 3rd gen community.

Do the little guy that is trying to help out the 3rd gen community a favor and buy from them. They’ll actually appreciate your order, and take the time to help you out on a much more personal level.

Adding weight is a penalty, and more so up high, so I prefer something light, and with that, the choices are pretty limited for us.

I too went with the Sherpa (aluminum), but their smaller rack (Antero). Just a 15 pound weight gain over what was removed...

I will say I prefer local/US made/member made items when possible.

Yes I do like the look of the Sherpa! How much difference is there between a aluminium one and steel?

I recall aluminum being almost 1/3 the weight of steel, or steel being about 2.5 times heavier... In that ballpark. Another factor for some is aluminum's corrosion and rust resistance. Not as strong as steel obviously, but for this application, strong enough.

Hey that doesn't look bad considering the low price. Thanks I'll check that out. Maybe that would be "good nuff" until I'm making the big bucks and can upgrade to a fancy one.

This is the Sherpa MKI. I’ve had my truck since 2014. This is the best rack I’ve seen on the market. I’ve had friends with custom racks, gobi racks, etc. I finally bit the bullet and got a Sherpa rack last month. 1 of the best decisions. I also have the quick disconnects for my tent and awning. When not in use, I dismount both in 10minutes.
