What's the best P265/65R17?

Do a search for that tire size and you'll see many threads on this topic that will help you.
Mine came from the factory with Bridgestone dueler 840s on it and they were ok - not bad, not great. Replaced at 40k with Michelin cross terrains and they are a notch better and lasting a long time.
For all terrain tires, I hear lots of cheers for Bridgestone Revos and Firestone Destination A/T's, as well as Nitto terra grapplers and BFG KOs.
For highway/all season tires, my rec. is Mich Cross terrains, but there are lots of good tire choices available at a lower initial cost than these. Long term tire cost is what I usually consider, not just initial sale price. (tread life, safe braking and handling, rolling resistance/mpg, etc)

X2 for the Michelin Cross Terrains
Pricey but worth every penny. Excellent on road - smooth and quiet, good for snow and ice too. Way better than the stock Dunlops mine came with.
If you're into the mud bogging you may want something with a more aggressive tread.
I did hear they were being discontinued.

Vote for Goodyear Fortera TripleTreds .... second set I've had on my SUVs (previous Honda Pilot and now my 4Runner) and I think they are outstanding. Plow through standing water/rainy conditions like nothing else ... which is major issue where I live.
Outstanding 'weather' performance. I don't have a need for off-roading tires ... but imagine they would be fine for light duty type of stuff too.

If I lived in NY and was staying with 265/65/17's rather than upsizing a bit these Pirelli's would be on my short list. A member here has/had them and said they were good. The reviews seem to indicate damn fine winter performance and good wear characteristics. There's been quite a few threads that sing the praises of the Mich Cross-Terrains. Mine came with them. All I can say is boring, non-sexy, impossible to fault so far... As the name would indicate, they do everything ok. They have a real road bias and are great on the street.

I would explicitly recommend against the Yoko's. Although they are highly rated by Consumer reports & such, my personal experience with them says they suck in snow. They came on my T4R when I bought her used last November, and they will be gone by the time next winter rolls around.Thai said:

I drove with the radio off and the windows both up and down to try and hear the most possible tire noise. I think the Discoverers might be just a tad bit louder than the stock Dunlops that I had on before, but then again I'd really have to drive them back to back to be sure.
