What's the best way to convince someone to buy a 4runner?

Have a guy a work that is considering either a Subaru all wheel drive or a 4runner and I'm trying to get a few videos together to try to get him to go with the 4runner. He's just wants something with 4wd/awd so he can pack some gear and go camping. You guys have any input? I think he's leaning either with a nice 3rd gen or 4th gen but I want to help make the sales pitch to him...thanks

I've own a 4th gen 4Runner and drive a 2014 Subaru Forester XT. The 4Runner has more room then the Subaru Forester. If he not doing any serious off roading the Subaru should be fine. There are some Subaru that built for off roading but it has limitation. 4Runner have more aftermarket support and way more off roading capabilities. I regret selling my 4Runner and now I'm searching for a 3rd gen.

yeah i figured with an endless supply of aftermarket parts and tech support from us he'd be all over it...i'll get a list of ideas and links together and see if i can make the sale this evening. I'm surprised how many people I find that either own Subaru or want one...but then want to upgrade to a 4runner.
 
Honestly, I’d talk to him a bit more to find out what he’s really looking for and then make a decision based off that. Even though I obviously love my 4Runner, I also know it’s not the best fit for everyone’s needs.

I also know this won’t be the most popular response.
 
A friend of a friend of a friend story, but...
tell him this true story.

My coworker used to drive a '99 Limited 4Runner. He had 295k miles and running strong when he t-boned a suburban 2 years ago and totaled it.

He wound up getting a new 2016 Subaru Forester. He likes it just fine, but 2 years into it, he still prefers his old 4Runner over the new Forester.
He said it just...feels better.

You can help him out with resources on 4Runners so he can gather info, but don't try to sell him on one.
What if you convince him to get a 4R, and then he has problems with it? You want that on you?! These are 20yr old rigs, and even if they were maintained above average, there is still a likelihood there are plenty of parts that could use replacing. If he gets one that seems to be in good shape, the rear axle seals go, the TB/WP needs done, and the suspension is all original- he could be up against a repair bill for half(or all) of what he just paid for it. You don't wanna be in that position- after selling him on how reliable they are!
A Subie might be a better rig for him anyway

Like everyone else, ask him what he is wanting to do or looks forward to doing.

As a lot of people here know I totaled my Tacoma (which I loved and regret...but oh well :( ). I needed a car and couldn't find my Tacoma after months of searching and purchased a Outback Limited with all the bells and whistles you could get. It was nice but it didn't feel right. Awesome to get 400+ miles per tank and it was just okay going on gravel and some dirt/sand roads, but lacked the feeling of the 4Runner. It also lacked some major space for packing things in to go camping or anything of the likes. Sold it shortly after and got my 5th Gen which I absolutely loved and wish things could have been different but unfortunately it happened the way it did...

The one thing I was well aware of with the 5th gen was the MPG doesn't exists when you mod it, or mod most off-road vehicles. But that didn't matter to me, what made me happy is what mattered to me and it felt so good/right driving it versus the Subaru. I still miss my Tacoma but overall I love my 4Runner way more.

Ultimately what is he wanting to do..
 
Its all in what you want to do. Of course, I have (and will continue to have) both Subarus and Toyotas. Horses for courses...

On person says head gaskets, the other will say frame rust. Both can be dealt with in multiple ways (I choose to live in a rust-free area and drive DOHC Subarus!)

take him out for a ride but don't pressure him... it's like getting a girl to like you, just play it cool and let the work do the talking
 
Show him this pic. Suby's are great, we have an 04 LL Bean H6. You'd have to put a lift on it with bigger tires & it still wouldn't have much ground clearance. No 4-lo either.
