Let him drive yours. Seriously, two of my friends drove mine due to unforeseen circumstances and 1-2 years later they both had a 3rd gen in the driveway.
What's the best way to convince someone to buy a 4runner?

I'm with Hepar, let your friend check out and test drive your 'Runner, but ask them to be sure on how they will use the vehicle. You honestly can't beat a Subbie for a DD, their AWD system is perfect for anyone who doesn't understand, or will ever use a transfer case lever.

If possible I'd suggest staying neutral and letting your friend make up their own mind. All that being said If you think that they are interested in a Gen3 think about letting them know about LBJ issues, lack of brakes, costs for a timing belt job and valve adjustment job. You may want to nudge them toward a Gen4.

Those Subaru's with stock tires off road are pretty impressive I must say, I don't see any other "car" type vehicle doing that. I appreciate the feedback and advice, think I'll just let him drive mine and let him make his own choice. These 3rd gens do require some love after 20 years of service which is a turnoff for some people, personally i like the challenge of bringing them back to life.
A 4th gen, FJ Cruiser or Subaru is probably better for him since he doesn't have a lot of mechanical experience. He said he just wants something to go camping with and hit up some of the state forests and such. Heck I must say I've been eyeballing the FJ Cruisers and 4th gens myself, I love driving the wifes 06 Sport model...smooth as silk and so much more power and comfort

If it's between a 4Runner or an FJ, there I'd definitely steer towards a 4Runner. I looked heavily at getting an FJ. The only reason I could find that was really better in the end was the manual option. Visibility sucks and less cargo room. I will say though that they are pretty sweet when built.

Aren't the only 4th gen 4runners the Trail Editions? Correct me if I'm wrong and i very well could be...i haven't researched them much. I'd go 4runner if i could be one with ATRAC, otherwise I'd get a FJ with ATRAC.

I absolutely agree with that, we have an 06 and we love it. I drove an FJ one time and loved the power and interior, but the visibility was horrendous. Kinda like backing up a van or box truck. I will have ATRAC next time though, even if i have to settle for it in the FJ form

if they want to play with the Cool Kids, get a Runner. Any Gen but we prefer classic styling and easy to mod so 3rd.

I don't try to convince my friends to buy 4Runners. I'd rather the good ones and the spare parts all be left for me :hungry:

They are so awesome. I’m unfortunately about to part ways with my last 4Runner. I wish I had room for 4 vehicles. The 3rd gens go everywhere. I have even had mine down some side by side trails, we didn’t know they were side by side trails at the time. It’s a ton of fun, unless someone wants to buy me a bigger garage.

You want to convince this person? Easy. If its a new Subie, tell this person to enjoy the rubber band effect of the CVT; all the engine groaning and moaning. Dont get me started about how a CVT will reject you from crawling up a very steep incline and keep you trapped. Subie? Tell this person to enjoy the lovely head gasket failures most subies are known for. Hell, just google subie problems and sit back and enjoy.
