Is AWD the same as the above too?

No it is not . Typically awd is a car based / crossover type of system. The way you can tell is a 4x4 has a selectable transfer case meaning 2wd hi , 4hi , 4lo , some have a neutral position. AWD does not have this.

AWD is nice and better than a 2wd vehicle in rain and snow . It will not go where a 4x4 can go by any means off road in tough stuff , from my experience with my friends Mercury Mountianeer V8 AWD.

4WD have low gearing in the transfer case, AWD does not. 4WD can be full time or part time, meaning it can or cannot be driving on dry pavement without causing binding and excessive driveline wear, respectively. The 4th gen 4Runner left in 4-Hi is the same as AWD, but since it has 4-Lo, it's a full time 4WD since it also has a center differential.
