What's the going rate for an '86-89 4Runner?

I am ready to start hunting for a project 4Runner. I am narrowing my search to a 1st gen and prefer the IRS since it will be used for mostly car camping and something to play with. I'm looking for a fairly rust free truck.

Here's what I've spotted locally in Albuquerque, NM (wondering if it would worth my time to travel to get one though).

'86, well used, not modified, 250K - $2500
'87 turbo, 202K w/22K on a rebuilt motor - $3000
'89, 240K - $4000

There's a few on autotrader too, mostly at dealers...not really looking to deal with a dealer though.

Seems to be about the same pricing as my area. I don't see anything wrong with paying around 3-4k as long as it is in decent shape and hasn't seen 20 plus years of trail duty.

That's a score on the turbo 4runner at that price with a fresh rebuild. If it is in good shape you can have the max loaded SR5 at a decent price. All depends on whether or not you are up to maintaining it and living with the responsibility of a turbo charged, self destructive rarity.

The engines themselves are fine but the stock manifold, turbo and exhaust was poorly designed. The manifold is a bottom mount that likes to crack prematurely. The CT-20 is underpowered, expensive and very unreliable. The restrictive exhaust doesn't help any of the above problems in the least.

Cool, good to know. I may avoid the turbo versions (if they come up) unless they are really well maintained.

Thanks

IMO the turbo 4runners are the best for a daily driver. The interior is just that much nicer compared to a regular SR5, the digital dash is just so retro cool you can't help but smile when you turn the key to the ON position. While the stock versions can be problematic (you can't ignore that turbos neediness and attention whoring). Many of them are still running that stock setup at over 300K miles with no problems. There are several turbo models out and about that have since replaced the stock manifold and turbo with something more reliable. A rebuilt CT-20 can cost you as much as a garrett T3 and a much improved aftermarket manifold so many choose to spend about the same amount of cash for something that is much better than stock.
Here are a couple of pictures of what I did to mine when sticking with the stock setup was no longer a viable option for me. I bought a Steed Speed top mount manifold, it is a 2 piece billet steel manifold, mucho indestructable. And to top that off I picked up a rebuilt .50 trim garrett T3.

I just bought an 87 SR5 5-Spd in North Alabama that has 243K and ~2K on rebuilt 22RE for $2K. It has 31" tires (trail busters...cheap but pretty good off road), rear aussie locker, marlin front bumper (no stinger), rock rails, custom built rear bumper, welded front diff and 99.5% rust free. Paint isn't great (5 outta 10). Body condition is fair (6 outta 10). Interior is fair (6 outta 10). Mechanically excellent (9 outta 10). Seems to me T4Rs are more expensive out there. Good luck with it.

Wow, that's a lot.
Here in the mid-Atlantic one would have to be in excellent shape with half that mileage to go for over $2K.

Hey that's my engine! haha those exhaust studs don't know what to think with all these different turbo setups they've seen.

I second that.
The petrol turbo is a rare truck these days. I picked up a digital dash on ebay to fit to my turbo diesel here in nz.

What part of Maryland? You find me a first gen in "excellent shape" for $2k, and I'll give you $1000.

some douchebag in Portland recently decided that he should just be an oxygen thief and steal my buddy's 3.4 swapped 88 4Runner, so some feel they are free:mad:

Nice SR5 Turbo first gens with low miles and nice paint/body will run you $5-10K realistically. Don't ask me how I know - the price you pay to join the club. But the older they get, rarer they get. Supply vs Demand. I have a '96 80 series that I paid $8K for 5yrs ago - my friend is Joe looking for similar LCs and they are now going for $15K. A better economy now too...

Just picked up my 89 with 147k with 3.0 and auto with a misfire on cylinder 5 for $800 last friday. Heres a pic of the ol jewel. I'll be on here looking for some help troubleshooting the misfire issue.
