Whats the ideal exhaust setup.

I want to get an exhaust for my 03V8. I want it to sound better, but also looking for HP increase. I was going to look into the intake, headers and exhaust. Anybody out there that has been through the pain already and can share some wisdom? I want a growl but nothing crazy, minimal drone.

I was thinking of the doug thoreley headers, afe intake and the magnaflow or similar.

Thanks

If you are looking for a hp increase that you can feel either boost it or ls swap it, as for the exasust magnaflow will give it a nice tone. Would not waste money on a intake because the stock one flows just fine, our engines dont make enough power to need any more, also for exasust if you do not want drone make sure you run it all the way to the back of the cab mine is dummped under the rear axle and it increased drone like crazy

You won't really gain a whole lot of HP even if you go with headers and fully new exhaust. Forced induction would be the way to go but there's no "bolt on" kits for the v8 so that would run you several thousand dollars of custom work and you'd have minimal support if you ran into issues.

You can do the long tube DT headers, replace the pinched y-pipe, and upgrade to a mild sounding muffler but that's gonna run you over a thousand dollars easily for barely more than 10% gain, if that. Or you can just buy a muffler for 100 bucks and be happy that you don't have a v6. The Dirty Deeds exhaust is a bit more expensive but everyone on here loves the sound of it, and zero drone.

IMO, it's only worth doing the headers if you have the common manifold cracks. When my manifold cracked I threw on the shorty DT headers and didn't notice much difference. I had the same HP dreams as you and ended up settling with the fact that these trucks are pigs. Apart from boosting the induction, you're not gonna make this a fast car. And even then you're driving a high center of gravity, poorly handling SUV.

URD has a kit for the V8s and if you can find a used TRD supercharger they made them for the 4.7 as well.

Here is a good link for dyno numbers:

You might be pleasantly surprised with intake/exhaust/URD MAF, I know I was/am.
Its not obnoxious... until you slam the pedal to the floor.

I can fully recommend the mods I did...as I actually did them...and I like it...for the V6.

Just gives it a little bit more 'pep' than stock, got a nice growl to it...not 'ricer' at all. I wouldn't call it 'drone' but you do hear the exhaust/intake now on mine.
Its not a race car. Not doing burn outs...just got a little more power.
Unless you are that one guy with the dancing dog avatar. Name escapes me at the moment.

...and then OP is talking V8...so that's not in my experience points...well mom allways liked the V8 too...weird because she is a bit timid, so I have driven the V8 GX470 and the V8 GX 460.
The only real reason I might want the V8 is to tow stuff and I don't like to do that all that much any more.
These V6 are kick ass.
