What’s the max speed to engage 4WD?

I’ve always heard that you can shift from 2H into 4H if your going under 62 miles per hour, but once your in 4H there’s no limit on how fast you can go. I had my 4Runner doing 70 in 4H on the freeway just fine

to me activate means turn on. so don't turn on above 60mph....however..if already on can you exceed 60mph? I have not …..just wondering
I have hit 50+.
and before trying to burn me on driving so fast in 4wd...come live and drive in my world...gee the high today was minus 19

I have routinely driven dry roads in minus 0 temperatures.

Sometimes up north on snow covered roads 4WD is not always needed.

He's living in Alaska. It'll be a long while yet before he see's dry roads. Permanent snow/ice cover I expect. How many people can imagine driving solid ice/snow for 6 months?

is there a specific card for 99 limiteds or a jcase shifter with out manual hubs? i dont have the card in my rig and id like to print out the correct one here at work on some nice thick card stock.

i also have a habit of stopping completely to shift into any sort of 4wd (rather it be high or low). id rather err on the side of caution than try to remember what i can and cant do at under 62mph.

i think the only think i shift on the fly is the AWD mode, and im never going faster than 25. i think ive done this twice now; although im still a little uneasy about it (this is my first 4wd vehicle).

You can still get the OEM card from the dealer. Doesn't cost much either... Look up the part number and order it. (use ToyoDIY.com or other site)

The label for my SR5 is PN 36369-35390
The label for a '99 Limited should be PN 36369-35470

Ugh, never mind. Looks like the SR5 label is still available and the Limited part is no longer available.

You should be regularly (once a month or more) shifting into 4WD (including locked mode, no need to use low range) - so make it a habit to do it every so often on a straight section of road if you aren't using it otherwise. I just shift into 4WD as I'm getting on the freeway, then shift back out a few miles down the road. This 'exercising' of the system is even more important on the push-button models, as the actuators can stick and go bad if they aren't used.

So, I thought I heard/was told not to exceed 60MPH when driving in 4WD. Did I just twist that around in my head? Should you try and stay under a certain speed when in 4WD, or does it matter?

The limit is only for shifting into 4WD. You can drive at any speed once in 4WD (though, if you need 4WD, why are you driving over 50 or 60mph?!?)
