1997 Limited, 3.4 V6, AUTO, 4WD. 316k Miles. No Rust. Clean Carfax. All maintenance done at Toyota dealership with paperwork to prove. Timing belt, water pump, valve cover gasket, alternator and radiator have all recently been replaced. Body looks in good shape, Driver seat looks heavily worn. Whats the most I should pay?

Looks clean from what little detail the CL add provides. He's asking OBO so I'd take 3,000 cash when you go look at it. Go for a test drive, engage everything on the truck make sure it all works or functions, see how cold the A/C is and see if you can't get it for 2,500 cash on the spot. If not I wouldn't go much higher then 3,000, these 4Runners are great trucks and even kept in great shape there is still a lot of unknowns 300K of them. Miles are miles and just from a value standpoint if you only get two years out of it your just a little over a hundred dollars a month at that price.

Here in Florida you could get that 4Runner easy for $2000 or less. I looked at one recently for $2500 with 180k miles on it. I know these 4Runners will pile on the miles but I also agree with over 300K there are a lot of unknowns and I personally would not buy one with over 200K unless it was a give away price. I would say keep looking and get one at around 150 to 200K and put the 100K plus miles on it yourself. :driving:

My feeling is that an automatic trans with 300K miles on it is a time bomb. The suspension(balljoints, bushings, etc) is likely...though not certain...to be loosey goosey by 300K miles.

Yes I guess I figured you were not looking at others. I would pass and keep looking as well, maybe wait if you can and save for a higher budget around 5,000 and you can get a considerably nicer, safer, runner. Although I know that's easier said then done. If you have time and can wait for a better deal then yes wait and around 200k is about average for these gen runners and at that mileage you can expect to get many, many years of enjoyment out of it.

Good luck, and don't hesitate to post a few more, we are always willing and ready to offer opinions, good or bad.

I'd offer him maybe $2500 tops. That's what I payed for our 99 with 230,XXX at the time, dealer maintained, one owner(who was a family friend). When you get up to that high of mileage, you need to know that it's a project to keep it going. Ball joints should be one of your first priorities.

What part of the country did the 4runner live for most of it's life? I've got a 99 4runner and the frame is rusting out completely. But I didn't notice it until I got under the car and really started to look around.

Even if it's a little bit of rust, I'd point that out and use it to drop the price down to $2000. Chances are good that the A/C doesn't work well, the shocks are crap, and the drum brakes are crap. You probably should replace all the fluids as well.

If you have a local garage do all this, it could easily be $2000 in repairs right off the bat.
Then you need to budget at least $5000 a year for stupid repair jobs like window not working, radio antennae not working, clock not working etc.

I'd still do it because it will be cheaper than any used $5000 SUV that you can buy in the long run. 4Runners engines just last and last.

I agree with this. ^^

Damn thats a cheap runner. I hope you already arranged a time to check this thing out. Posting a link to a runner this cheap on a forum might not be the best idea if you are serious about buying, because now im serious about buying this one too haha

I wouldn't touch it with over 300K already on it without looking extensively through that dealer maintenance. I'd want a compression and leak down check prior to purchase as well. I doubt I'd pay more than 2-2250 IF I saw everything I'd want to in the maintenance. Front end ball joints, LBJ, UBJ, OTRE at a minimum

From photos the rear mud flaps/bumper flares are from a newer model and the front bumper is missing both fender flare pieces, which means they both were likely replaced.

Is this going to be a required Daily? A trail rig? Depending on what you're using it for would alter the decision as well.

I'd just keep looking. $3500 is WAY too much money for it, even though it seems to be well taken care of. Personally I'd take one in slightly worse condition with fewer miles on it. 300k is a LOT even for these trucks. You're going to have to sink another $1500-2000 into it to rehab the suspension and brakes and whatnot, and you're still going a drivetrain with 300k on it.

If I remember right and I'm not in my 4runner right now, there is no light for 4WD low. In low however mines pretty torquey and will jump forward when I hit the gas and it's a 97.
