What's the point of 2WD?

Its true - I'm from NY. I also didn't know you could buy full size trucks, SUVs etc in 2WD for a while. Every thing is 4wd. Only 2WD 4runners ive seen come up north from the south

I recently bought a 2wd 5th gen with cash. I got a deal on it, really wanted a 4wd, was set on the 4runner drive train, so it came down to the great deal and came home with the 2wd.

Here in NC, the only really place to go off road is the beach. Being the local and fed gov have gotten greedy and charging a $50 a day beach pass, that is a deterrent.

There is a big price difference and I think way down the road, 4wd will do better on resale. You have such a bigger market when you go to sell a 4wd. Folks will buy a high mileage 4wd without thinking twice.

AWD is a big no no. They are really worse on mpg and cost much more to have serviced. You have to take out major parts just to change a starterr.

I've always just wondered what the 4th gen (or really any gen) has for 4Hi/4Lo knobs/switches. Do they just not have that tool? Is it there but not used/labeled?

I would guess people buy 2WD 4Runners because

• It's cheaper
• It saves gas
• They like the looks

As far as getting a 4x4 for better traction in snow or rain and assuming we're talking about on-road conditions and all season tires, I don't think it's justified..

I'll explain why.. Just got a 2018 T4R Off Road and had a chance to drive it in snow in 2HI and 4HI with the factory installed Dunlop Grandtreck AT20 all season/all terrain tires.
The traction in 4HI is obviously better and yes you can accelerate faster on snow covered roads and have better traction but shit.. the braking is horrible and 2HI/4HI doesn't have a difference! I was driving 35-40 mph and changed lanes and almost lost control..

So.. if the vehicle is used on road I would say invest in 2WD and good set of winter and summer tires than buying a 4x4 with all season tires.

I spend abut 95% of the time in 2WD, the convenience of 4WD is negligible except when it snows around here in the PNW.
I must not be a 4WD snob.....
