What's This? (cooling system)

saw some dried coolant. need to investigate. what is this? it sits along the firewall just behind the engine and has coolant lines.

does it typically break or am i just likely dealing w/ an old hose circa '98. no issues w cooling in the cab.

update. found the likely leak. as i was sliding the new hose on fr the driver's side, the nipple fell apart.

toyota still stocks it. $130.

hope that does it.

ps. it's called the heater control valve.

You can get it for way less than $150. Somewhere like Partsouq, Amayama, or Toyota Parts Deal will probably sell it for half that.

That is normal, mine leaked the very same way. A word of warning, the plastic hose barb likes to break off in the hose no matter what. Have a hook or something that you can use to extract the plastic barb from the hose, I found my broken key extractor worked perfectly for this.

got a new length of hose for where it broke. Checked out Toyota Parts Deal. $124 all in. $133 fr dealer down the street & available today.

I know you already purchased the part, but for future readers: I replaced this on my 4Runner with a generic RockAuto part. I know a lot of people here prefer OEM, but if you're pinched for money, the part I bought was UAC HV1227C and it has lasted me two years at this point. Heating (front and rear) has worked great during that time! No leaks either

Sort of crazy yet over the years my 01 has had 3 heater valves fail (leak) - and all of them were OEM - I bought them at a local dealer - go figure.

So yes next time I will go non-oem and see how my luck holds out.

I replaced my original last year with a new OEM unit - and the old one was basically still perfect. Not sure how that happened, since my 4Runner has been in warm (though not full desert) areas of California its whole life. Also, it had basic green coolant most of that time.

Supposedly the 79710-SDA-A01 Honda heater control valve uses the exact same Denso valve as the one on our 3rd gens. You would have to reuse your existing bracket and control arm. I see them for less that $40 using google search.

Glad to have feedback on the aftermarket ones... I know if they turn burn or cream color plastic its best to just replace them before they do fail on you.

tried a generic one and it was bad quality/functionality. It also leaked after less than 2 years maybe one.

I tried aftermarket ones from Napa and Amazon, both leaked within 6 months. I eventually found an OEM one on partsouq for less than half of what the dealer wanted. Hasn't leaked a drop in many years.
