What's this for??

I was under the 4Runner looking at a he tranny and saw this. Looks like some kind of rubber mount.

I believe it's a vibration damper. Not 100℅ sure though.

I took that thing off mine and have realized DECREASED drive line vibrations. Mine was all cracked up and jiggly though...

Yea, mine moves around easily and not sure if it still serves its purpose

It's not supposed to move at the bolt at least, unsure if the rubber is supposed to move at all. Never seen a new one.

To a degree. If its bolts to the t-case are tight, but the rubber and metal bit moves around freely (within the constraints of the metal "surround") and makes a metal-on-metal jingling noise when you poke it... then it probably detached over time and is just resting in there. Probably causing a lot of metal on metal vibrating noise, too.

So... you can pull it, get a new one, or (what I did) shoot a bunch of soft epoxy between the metal part in the middle (on the underside - in the pic it looks like a dog bone) and the metal part adhered to that rubber telephone receiver lookin' thing. It silenced the noise mine was making and gave me a bit of peace of mind.

Hard to describe here, but with a new one you should be able to slide a pencil between the rubber phone receiver thing and the metal on the underside. With a spent one, you'll be able to pass a pencil above it between the top of the phone receiver thing and the metal mounting bracket.

Great explanation, thanks. I will wait for a warm day and try your suggestion. Mine is way too loose and chatters a lot. Thanks again
