What's your choice in grade?

Hey everyone, next month i will be a proud new owner of a T4runner, 2003 limited 4.7 V8.

Im just trying to gather as much info as i can. What grade oil does everyone run? 5-20, 5-30 ?

Grade of oil

I run 5w30. I just traded my 01 limited for an 03 limited 4.7 and I absolutely love it. I went all out as far as options because I wanted the navigation which from what I can tell by the 100+ runner I looked at come with all the towing options as well (adjustable rear suspension most notably) which makes the rear stand a bit high. My 22" effen hurricanes don't look quite as big now so next year I am going for the 24". I am currently researching cat back exhaust systems to buy so that v8 can breath easier. Other that that I love my new runner and I am sure you will too! Congrats and enjoy!

Looks like 5-30 is the way to go. I guess im ok running the 5w-30 through our cold winters here in ontario as well?

Did toyota always recommend the 5-30 for this truck, or did that change recently?

I use 5W-30 here in Colorado, never missed a start overnite in the cold high mountains.

Look in your manual or on the top of the fill 'spout' in the vehicle. It'll most probably say 5W-30.
 
I run full synthetic 5W-30 with a Toyota Filter.

My last oil change was at 7K. Some might think that kinda low mileage wise but I did a lot of towing during that interval involving mountains.
I have more towing trips coming up including a 1700 mile trip involving mountains and some flatter tows as well.

I'm with you! Oil changes are cheap preventative maintenance. I change the oil in my wife's '94 Celica with 190,000 every 3,000 miles and my T4R with 92,000 every 5,000 miles.

I wouldn't dream of going 15,000! That seems insane to me, over the life of the car you'd only change the oil like 15 or 20 times MAX!

I thunk 7,000 is the most I would go.

Mobil 1 30W every 7500 mi. here in FL.. Toy dealer put 0-20w pens in at first..I dumped it after 5k and now use M1 only per my local Toy tech in Tampa..
 
Is the 5 W 30 a preference or factory recommended wt for V8s? The Dealer put 5 W 20 in my newly purchased 07 V6 2WD. I called thinking it was a mistake in the North TX heat. I was told 5 W 20 is what is recommended here. Our 2001 Camry uses 10 W 30. What is the deal on oil wts (Year and Model)? I need an oil change now @ 2,000 mi due to 5,000/6mo recommended changes. I plan to use Toyota’s oil filter and Castrol’s 5 W 20 for peace of mind with the warranty in mind. I save on gas but the 2,000/6mo oil changes seem excessive even with contamination in mind. Paying for an Ext Warr and staying in their guidelines is a Peace Of Mind Thing IMHO! jow
 
Congrats on the t4r. Ive had my v8 LMD for about a year now with absolutely no regrets. You won't be disappointed. Except keep an eye on the dash for cracks. It's the only thing I can really complain about that I have had no control over.

I always use Mobile Syn 5w30 like everyone else.
 
I found this mobil 1 oil that claims it can handle 15k so was just wondering if anybody has been using it.

Mobil 1 5W30. I change it once per year, but only drive about 6,000 miles each year.

As for the exhaust on a V8, I highly recommend the full Magnaflow Cat-back system. It breathes easy and growls ever so deeply.

change it at 7k, mostly because the oil maintenance light comes on at about 3,500 when I reset it and then change it when it comes on again about 3,500 miles later.

Anyone happen to know how to set the oil maintenance light to 7k?
