Wheel Arch Rust

Has anyone encountered this before? I'm in the process of finding a 4th gen, and one I found seems to be a good candidate except for some rust in the right rear wheel arch.

All I have to go on is the picture I attached. Any thoughts on if this is something I could grind down myself and rattle can, or ballpark of how much a professional repair would run me? Kind of hard to tell how deep it goes, I suppose. But it looks like the door covers it so I'm not too concerned about how it looks. Would just be trying to get it to not keep eating away at it.

Any insight at all would be appreciated. Thanks!

the door covers it, and its easy for moisture to get trapped in there, so id probably just sand it down and rattle can it. its highly unlikely anyone will ever notice it, especially with such an easily matched color

Thanks! That's more or less what I was thinking.

I guess the only thing that is worrying me is if it is further progressed than you can tell from the photo.

Sand it past the rust area, especially the bubbled up area just so you know your into clean metal

Sorry to revive an older thread, but I cannot create a new thread. My truck has this same issue, I don't regularly use that door, and my kids didn't bother to let me know of new rust! The metal seems very thin in general in that location, causing my worry about how best to repair. Would sanding it down and adding some jb weld be sufficient?
I noticed some rust forming lower on the backside of that same piece, right by the wheel, will have to sand and paint that whole strip I think.

I would try and find another door at a savage yard and replace it, once rust gets that bad it's hard to repair, to do it right the only way is to cut out all the rusted metal and weld/patch in new metal. do the necessary body work and paint it, must more costly then replacing the door, especially if you can find one the same color, but even if you had to paint the door it would still be cheaper.

While the door covers it, it it wraps in from the wheel well, not part of the door...

I’d just sand it down, then touch up paint or spray paint it (if you spray paint wet sand after to blend with like 2000 grit)

If that’s all there is on a 14 year old car it’s doing pretty well
