Wheel/Brake Clearance Clarification

So I am still shopping for a new set of wheels, and I see so many more 15" 4runner wheel sets than 16in. I know you need the 16"s to clear the larger tundra brake calipers, and I have also heard that you can't put 15" wheels on a 4runner that came with 16" wheels.

Can someone clarify why this is if it really is true? My VIN plate on the driver door jam says 15x7, but I have 16"s on it (I am pretty sure it came with 16's stock as it has every option listed on the brochure for SR5's).

I would like to get a set of 15" wheels if I can fit them as I can get a pretty good deal on them.

I'm pretty sure the 4Runners that came with 16" wheels have bigger brake calipers that the 15" wheels won't clear. Or there may be some other reason, but I've also heard you can't fit 15" if your truck came with 16". If you want 15", you need to get aftermarket. I think everyone's door jam says 15x7.

If the truck came with 16" wheels then it most likely has 16" brakes too so the 15s would not work. The exception would be if it originally came from the factory with 15s and the dealer upgraded just the wheels to 16s, but not the brakes. It's not common, but I'm sure it happened here and there. If you have ~.75" of space between the outside edge of the caliper and the inside edge of your 16" wheels, then you could fit 15s. If it's like mine, there is only ~.25" of space and 15s definitely would not work.

There are two styles of 16" wheels. One will allow Tundra calipers w/o modification, the older style requires trimming.

I don't think the 15" wheels will work with the Tundra calipers at all.

If you're really intent on 15" wheels, why not try a test fit?
