Wheel painting question

Hi all. Been a way for a while with a Camry :cry2: but should have my new 20 OffRoad Premium by the end of the week. (Side note why the hell did they change the name; its the same truck as my 14 Trail) Anyway this time I wend with white so I'll be looking to paint the rims a little darker color. I've done this before with the a 07 white STi where I painted the BBS with the graphite duplicolor wheel paint. My question is -- I want to go dark graphite but not all the way to black. Does anyone have any experience with laying down a base coat of the black before painting the graphite over it? Just wondering if that might darken up the end result or if its a complete waste of time. Thanks
