Wheel Q's! I'm clueless...

Hey folks, looking to buy some new wheels to go with my 285/70/17 GY Wrangler Duratracs. I don't want to spend too much, probably $700 dollars or less, but also need to remember the saying "you get what you pay for" so I want to make sure I'm not buying garbage wheels that won't stand up off-road.

What do you all recommend? What sizes wheels do you recommend.

I found: Xd Series Spy 797 Gloss Black W/Machine | Wheels | Rims | Rimz | Wheelz

Which I really like the look of, and under select product, it gives the option of 17x8 or 17x9, then different offsets and different hub sizes, what do these numbers mean, and what specs should I look for when shopping?

Thanks in advance for your help

I'm no pro when it comes to wheel selection but I would remind you to keep in mind that if/when you do off-roading, you probably won't want a "nice" set of wheels on your rig once you start getting into mud, rocks, trees, etc.

Just a thought, though, I know some people could give two $hits about that haha.
Unless of course you are going to have two sets of wheels - 1 for strictly off-roading and the other for on-roading.

:roadkill:

Get what you like, BUT be aware that many "budget" wheels are just cast aluminum, and poor quality at that.

For street use, probably okay, but they will NOT take much abuse in an off-road application.

If for looks, pull the trigger, if for go........not sure.

do people usually go for steelies offroad then? I figured its easy for me to clean off a nice set of wheels after a mud/rocking trip, and its not too easy to bust up alloys unless you scrape a rock against them. Was that assumption wrong?

I'm about 70/30 on-road/off-road, and I don't do anything too serious, but I do need a wheel that will stand up. What wheels have you guys used that you would recommend?

EDIT: also, whats the general consensus on 16" vs 17" rims.

I know alot of guys that wheel their stock rims and I don't remember any reports of failure. If you are at 30% offroad, you are more than likely going to scratch/gouge any rim you pick up so keep that in mind.

The rims you linked above are a bit "fancy" for my taste and scratches will be more noticeable on shiny rims. If you are set on picking up some new rims, I'd take a look at ATX mojaves, Method wheels or Pro Comps.

Now that you're 4Runner is more capable, if I were you, i'd run your stocks for now and pick up a set of sliders.

If you can find then, I recommend SE wheels! I love them!

Any experience with these wheels? or with fuel offroad in general?
buddy of mine has them on his tacoma at school. He muds, thats about it, and seems to keep them pretty clean! Check out American Outlaw, not sure on their price range, but if i could do it over again, i'd buy those buckshots or colts in a heartbeat... notice you've kinda got the black theme in mind, but those are just options I'm tossing out!
EDIT: also, kinda pricey depending on size, but the KMC XD Monsters are a real mean looking wheel, and offered in a Matte black, so you could wheel in them and any blemishes would be less noticeable! It's not necessarily flat black, just lacking gloss, they look great tho!

Yeah, I staunchly sticking to my black on blue theme... though I do like a bit of silver in the wheel, it accentuates the black! Also, the fuel wheels come with a warranty, which is definitely something I'm looking for.

yea i fully respect that, i've got the same feel going on with mine! Those fuel wheels are great, they'd be a good choice if you're into them! IMO Steelies aren't my favorite on runners, i've seen a few on here... They're just ok... Not my ride tho!

Yeah, steelies aren't the best looking, mind you, they aren't ugly. If these fuel wheels don't hold up, I guess I'll learn from experience.

Yeah I'm looking for wheels too. Same theme as you actually. I like the black with maybe a hint of silver like the center cap. It's frustrating because I want to pick my wheels before I lift and get tires so I don't have to pay to get tires mounted twice. I feel like I find a wheel I like and always want to keep looking, haha. And although I don't get off road as much as I would like, I definitely want something nice looking without having to worry about it on the trails.
