Wheel Question

Hope this isn't a really dumb question but I went to get my brake pads done today and my mechanic couldn't get my wheels off due to the type of lug nut I have. The last time my wheels were taken off was when i originally bought them and I recall the guy talking me into different lug nuts for whatever reason. So my question is what are these called and where can I get an attachment to get them off?

A lot of times they put the key in the glove box... Sorry if you already looked for it or if it's a stupid suggestion, just thought I'd throw it out there.

It'd be a lot easier to answer your question if you posted a pic of what special lugs you have.
