Wheel size for '05 SR5

I have 17" wheels on my 4R. Can anyone tell me if the width is 7 or 7.5"? I'm told that 285/70/17's will fit on the a 7.5" rim. Is this true? I really don't understand why I would be better off getting 16x8's. Please explain.

You have 17x7.5's. You can technically fit 285/70/17's on your wheels but will experience HEAVY rubbing due to the specification of the wheel.

I would highly recommend that you get the 16x8 with the proper settings (4.5 Backspacing and 0 offset) and then pick up some 285/75/16's.

The biggest reason to get 16's vs 17's? PRICE. 285's in 16's are MUCH cheaper than 285's in 17's. Also wheel prices come down significantly. Lastly, when you offroad, the more sidewall you have the better you are so with 16's you have abit more sidewall than 17's.

Although you are correct, don't some runners have too big of a rotor to allow for 16" rims? I believe my runner wouldn't fit a 16" rim. Bummer, the price is worth the change long run.

I believe the SE has larger brake rotars and must at least a 17" rim. I have the SR5, so should be ok with 16's

All SR5's have the smaller rotors to fit the 16" wheels. The SE and the Limiteds (2003 Mid Production I think and newer) have the larger rotors.

I've got the 285/70-17's on my 04 Sport and I only had rubbing on the plastic parts in the wheel well. The tires fit on the stock wheels fine.

That tight of a fit on road results to even tighter when off road;an inch of lift would do wonders with allowing more flex.

You have a body lift and wheel spacers. If not for those upgrades your 285s would be rubbing all over the place.

I think a stock 4Runner cannot go higher than 275-70-16 or 275-65-17 without rubbing.
