Wheel Sticking

Just wondering if anyone has had a problem like this:

My right rear wheel is sticking.

Generally it happens when I back out of a parking spot and then shift into Drive, the truck doesnt want to go anywhere. I had my diesel mechanics take the tire off, and they seem to think the caliper isnt releasing. Does that sound right? I had some friends in the truck a couple weeks ago, and they asked if it was the tranny??? Ive been real busy with work lately, so I havent taken it to an auto shop yet.

Its a 99 4Runner Limited 4WD with 85K miles. Stock except for the tint and K&N air filter.

Do you have rear drums?

If so, my buddy's runner had the same problem. It turns out that his right rear axle seal was leaking diff fluid into the rear brakes causing the shoes to bind in the drums. Symptoms were exactly the same as yours.

I've had my right rear seal leak (and replaced)...seems many 3rd gens have the same issue.

I'd bet it was the rear seal also since it isn't really an uncommon issue on 4Runners as they approach 100k miles.

Thanks for the suggestions! Ive taken the affected wheel and drum off, and there is no leaking fluid, so that really leads me to believe it is the caliper that is sticking. Im not sure what is involved with replacing the caliper, i guess it would mean just ordering the part (any suggestions on brand?) and then bleeding the system???

Wow, I didn't realize I hadn't followed up with this post:

Turns out it WAS the rear seal, but it was on the opposite side that was sticking...

Be sure to remove your rear differential breather and clean it out. I use PB Blaster on mine. When the differential heats up and the air can't get out the breather it will blow oil out the axle seal.
