Wheel/Tire combos

Hey, all. New to this forum and haven't been a 4Runner owner for very long.

It's time to buy tires and I was planning on getting new wheels at the same time. I'd like to just get some black steel wheels and some A/T's. I drive a lot on the interstate and in the city, but I also am off-road occasionally on kayaking trips. It's just a 2-wheel drive.

Need some advice on a couple of things.

1. Should I stick with the same wheel and tire size? I've got the P265/65R17's.
2. Any recommendations on brand of steel wheels? I was looking at Pro Comps or American Racing.
3. I'm pretty sure it's going to be between the BFG A/T or the Nitto TG's. I had the BFG's on my Tacoma and liked them a lot, but don't know much about Nitto's A/T tires. Is that just a toss-up? I think the BFG's look better.
4. Is there anything to be concerned about with spacers, and will I for sure have to use them? A local guy told me not to get wheels that require spacers, and that all of the steel wheels he has would require spacers.

Welcome, from another AL 4runnner lover. I had the same problem when shopping for my wheels and tires. I'll try my best to answer your questions.

1. Yes, unless you plan on lifting. You might be able to get away with one size larger without lifting, but I'm not sure. I installed a Daystar 2.5/1.5 kit on mine. Then, after I got my wheels and tires put on I had to remove the front mud flaps and push the fender liners forward. No big deal but some people might not want to do all of that.
2. I ended up getting some 17" Konig Six Shooters. I really like them and they have a little bit more offset than stock so I didn't need spacers. I don't really know anything about steel wheels so I can't help you there.
3. I have BFGs and my brother has Nittos. Having driven both of them I like the ride of the BFGs better, and I agree they look cooler.
4. The only concern I have with spacers is that if they fail they fail miserably. If you search the forum you can probably find some pictures of the aftermath of a spacer failure. Its most likely due to improper installation and a lot of people use them with no problems, but to me its just not worth it. That's why I got wheels with more offset than stock, so I can get the look without spacers.

as far as tires go i know people have fit 255/75/17's and 265/70/17's with little to no rubbing depending on the tire

I'm looking at getting a set of 255/75 r17 AT tires for my stock sr5 rims. A true 32" tire at a 10" width. I plan to lift about 2" later, but it seems the tires will fit with zero to minimal rubbing
