Wheelchair transportation...recommendations?

Hey, guys and gals. I'm having to order a wheelchair for my wife (she has MS and these days she can't get around as much as she used to without a little help), and I'm trying to figure out transportation options. We both refuse to give up the 4Runner ('07 V6 Sport), so we need to find a solution (toyed with the idea of a minivan...neither of us like that...*gag*).

I've been stuffing her rental chair in the back, folded and laid flat, but it takes up the entire cargo space. I've thought about a basket for the roof, but not sure I want to deadlift 20-30lbs over my head multiple times per day (but I will if I have to). My concern is what to do with our other gear when we travel, or if we have people with us.

Anyone have any experience with this sort of transport or any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!

Well you could get an ultralite chair, yes they cost more. It would be easier to move around. You could also get some kind if hitch system. I doubt they make on for wheelchair, but I have seen metal hit baskets for cheap that you could strap it down to.

Yeah, we're actually looking at an ultralight chair (getting her fitted tomorrow). The wheels come off, so it should be an improvement over the rental chair I'm using now.
