You might as well knock out the Rubicon since your there and get that out of the way...............................JK
trails.com show a pretty easy but looks like fun one "Crystal Peak Loop" and there's a bunch more listed there.

The Reno area is full of places to wheel. I posted this in another thread:
Hey, I live in Carson City so I know of a few in the area. There are four that come to mind that would probably be doable in a stock 4runner. you can google these to get the locations and more info about the trail.
1. Kings Canyon-starts in Carson City and climbs to Spooner Summit- off of hwy 50
2. Jumbo Grade- Starts in Washoe and ends in Virginia city.
3. Eldorado Canyon- Starts in Dayton and ends in Minden.
4. Goni Road Trail- starts in Carson and meets up with Jumbo Grade.

you could do the Eastern portion of the Rubicon, starts in Tahoma along Lake Tahoe and then works its way up into the Sierras. trail is easy going with some nice challenges, but nothing scary/threatening and you can always turn around when you get past your comfort zone. wanders along some beautiful terrain for awhile and there are lots of entertaining things to do along the route. Doesnt get difficult till it heads down toward Rubicon Springs.
Tons of wheeling around N. Reno/Sparks area. Head out to Moonrocks area and watch other people trash their s##t

Yep, moonrocks is fun for exactly that.
If you're here for Hot August Nights you might just want to just drive up Peavine to get out of the heat. It's a well maintained dirt road up to an antenna farm with some trails off the main rd. You can go up and back in an hour. Nice view at the top. I should warn you that some of the side trails are overgrown with sage so watch out for pinstripes.

Thanks for the replies, headed out in the morning (it is friggin hot down here). I am stoked rubicon will have to wait a few hundred thousand more miles, I roll this thing now and I would have to kiss my house good bye (or at least half of it). I've never wheeled outside my home state and am looking forward to it, thinking I should have installed my diff drop kit though.
Down here for hot August Nights just ordered wider wheels that have to be shipped home can't get them here before I leave would have loved to break them in here as well. Having summit racing right down the road gets really expensive, I'd go broke living down here (saved a fortune over every major dist. on the same wheels though paid for the trip.
I'll try to have my wife take some pics if we get into some cool s**t. I was just told about the rules down here (wheelers paradise) if it ain't marked its legal Washington is screwed they keep taking away more and more every year, have to stick to the green dots if you can even find them anymore. I assume you mean the old mine and not the park? Easiest way is probably out in Verdi. Look for signs for Dog Valley. Bridge st. off of the main rd (old hwy 40) is the road. That turns into a gravel rd to Dog Valley, Long Valley, and Crystal Peak. You can also get there from up and over Peavine or Bordertown (395 North just past Cold Springs). I suggest a map GPS or GE for Crystal Peak but if you stay on the main road thru Dog valley it's well marked...at least it was.

Kings Canyon Road update
Hello all. I know this thread is a little old, but I wanted to give a little update on this trail as I just did it last weekend coming out of Carson City, NV into Lake Tahoe.
Although it's rated in the Massey's Nevada trails book for the region as a moderate trail, he rates the difficulty as a 4 out of 10 in difficulty, and states that a stock SUV should be fine -- I have to say that is definitely NOT the case. This trail has some washed out off camber turns, a couple creek crossings that were pretty shallow but hard to see because of tree coverage, a short but intense rock crawl, and all of this with some serious exposure to a cliff on an ever more narrow trail -- lots of pin striping.
Admittedly, I'm pretty new to off roading, but I was quite scared. Not still having fun scared, simply "this is awful, I can't believe this is happening SCARED". And the trail is too narrow and treacherous to turn around. Moreover, it can be accessed from both sides, so you might have to negotiate a pass -- how in the world you'd do that is beyond me.
Most online resources actually refer to it as a mountain bike trail, which actually would be really fun. And on the way out, we did come across a guy on a dirt bike who he looked at me like I was nuts for having just popped out of that trail in my 4runner.
I'm sure there are many people on this forum who would have no problem on this trail, but I just wanted to give other newbs like myself a little warning that this trail will test your limits for sure and possibly push you beyond them. Please be careful.
