Wheels (what would you do?)

I'm planning on getting new tires soon (BFG All Terrain), and I'm debating replacing my wheels (rims) as well. The current ones are steel 'American Racing', and painted black, but starting to very lightly surface rust in a few places.

When I first bought the truck, I really didn't like the black wheels, but I am warming up to them now... I'd like to know what other people think, Below is a shot of my truck with the current wheels, and a pic of what I would replace them with (however in a 15 inch and 6 lug version).

It also brings me to double check my sales person, as he didn't seem too bright... In a measurement of 30x9.5R15, the '9.5' is the width of the tire (right?) is that width of tread, or where it meets the wheel? Will a 30x9.5R15 fit on a 15"x7" wheel?

I had the 31x10.5x15 BFG AT's on factory 7" rims with no problems at all. I am now running 33x13.5x15 on 8"rims and loving it.
I don't know what backspacing mine has though, make sure they get that part right.

I have older BFG TA's of 31X9.5 on a 15" rim. The tread width measures 7.5" and the toal width of tire including buldge is 9.5". I would go with the non black rims as black tires and black rims draw too much attention and unbalance the look of the truck, personal preference though.

7" rims are fine for that tire and even for much larger tires. Personally I like the black rims and black tires (can't stand to see those raised white letters turned out!).

Repaint them or have them powder coated. Btw, I also like the rims that you chose but I, again, would go black on your 4Runner. Just my 2 Cents.

Go For Both!

I figure the winters in wisconsin can't be much different than here in Ontario so I'd buy the aluminum wheels and use them with the BFGs as summer wheels and then buy some cheap snow tires and put them on the black rims.

I'm sure the BFGs are good in the snow but they won't have the softer rubber compound that snow tires have and won't be as good.

Also your BFGs will last longer since half the year you'll be running winter tires and the rims won't be exposed to road salt.

I bought some winterforce tires for my 4runner 2 years ago from tirerack.com for about $57/tire and I ran them year round and they're still in good shape. That 4runner was written off in an accident in April.

Part of the reason I want the BFG ATs is for the snow. When I had my old '86 I had those tires and would go cruising on country roads in 2-4" of snow for fun, and that truck wouldn't slide a bit. When I go rid of it I got a Jeep Wrangler, and put it in the ditch three times in the first week of snow because of what I was used to...

i would go back to stock wheels or else get some stock wheels from a later model 4runner but thats just me

Would a set of '99 era Limited wheels fit? I've never seen that done on a 1st gen and that would look pretty cool and unique.

On the subject of tires and snow - BFGs are pretty decent but since I've driven a few winters on my Nittos they are much better composed in the snow especially in the rearend than any BFGs I've driven on and the Nittos also have a 50k mileage warranty now.

Well, I decided to go against the flow here, as some of my friends and family agreed that they liked the silver rims better, and wanted to post the result. I think it left me with a much better look.

They're from Zracing, and were the cheapest rims they had, and were coincidentally almost the exact style I wanted. I'm really happy with how they turned out... And they do look just like what was on that Camero :
